Schools in south west london

Pmum5 · 05/12/2010 13:00

We are moving to south west london next year and are looking for independent co-ed/boys schools for year 4 and above. Appreciate any recommendations for Putney, Wimbeldon, Twickenham and Richmond area. We have already applied for Kings College but dont want to bank on one given the no. of children applying vs seats available.

You are right not to bank on just Kings as it is very competitive.

Have you looked at Newlands House in Twickenham? Not sure what places they have spare for year 4, but is good coed that I have heard good things about.

Newland House and Mall Twickenham, both worth a look. Newland has quite large class sizes. Denmead in Hampton seems to often have places, small classes, links with Hampton school , seems to have a widish academic intake, parents I know happy with it..

Really, pinkElephants, Shock I love it there and yes I have boys. Would love to know more, but am guessing you can't spill .

Radnor House in Twickenham is opening in Sept 2011 on the old St James's boys site. It is from age 7-18 and from what i hear is very impressive. might be worth a look?

Rokeby, Shrewsbury House, Willington, Ibstock, Felton Fleet, Hampton feeders.

PinkElephantsOnParade · 06/12/2010 09:26

From what I have heard from friends Rokeby seems to have lost its way a bit recently.

Talk is the new headmaster is not very impressive.

Go and take a look and have a good chat with the head and see what you think.

I am impressed with the new head at Shrewsbury House myself, but its still early days.

Friends have also told me good things about Feltonfleet, but I have no direct experience.

It is ££££ though!

PinkElephantsOnParade · 06/12/2010 09:27

Radnor House sounds interesting and worth a look.

SantaIsMyLoveSlave · 06/12/2010 10:03

Have heard good things about Shrewsbury House, particularly for boys into sport or drama.

There's always the Harrodian -- I hear such polarised things about that that I find it hard to know what to believe. It seems to be a bit like Marmite.

PinkElephantsOnParade · 06/12/2010 10:27

Santa, we are very happy with it.

There do seem to be new places for each year group as the number of classes gradually increases as they move up the school.

It has had a reputation in the past for not being as academic as other schools, but don't you believe it. academics are very rigorous and boys regularly get scholarships to top senior schools.

Fiddledee · 06/12/2010 11:58

think you need to narrow down your search areas unless you are chosing school first and then house. Although many may not know if they have a place for year 4 for september until after easter

PinkElephantsOnParade · 06/12/2010 12:06

Well I would say all the areas mentioned are fairly close together and reachable from where I am especially if you use schools transport.

Personally I would get the house sorted in a fairly central location then see about schools. Kids travel in to most from quite a wide area.

Fiddledee · 06/12/2010 13:12

I don't anybody living in Twickenham would consider the Chiswick/Hammersmith/Wimbledon schools at the prep level. Some of the prep schools have buses, you need to check the routes but you also need to consider getting to fixtures and school events - if you look at the A to Z it may not look that far until you try and drive it at school drop off/pick up.

SantaIsMyLoveSlave · 06/12/2010 14:25

But if you're living in (say) Putney you'd consider Wimbledon, Hammersmith, Richmond and Kingston to all be relatively local (probably not Twickenham, unless you were madly keen on the school).

We live in Putney and, along with several other families, take our children to Thomas's, Battersea. Sons currently in Year 3 and Year 1, daughter in Reception. It's a phenomenal school - we all love it - good teaching whatever your academic ability, plenty of drama, art, music, sport, and zillions of clubs, trips, visitors etc. It's a vibrant place to go to school. Goes up to 13+ and feeds into a wide range of day and boarding school depending on yr child's academic ability and interests.

There's a big choice of schools in SW London, both private and state have some brilliant ones. Best to look at a few with your child's nature in mind. When we walked into Thomas's Battersea, we knew instantly it was the right school for our son (and our family) and I guess if you look at a few, you'll be better able to narrow it down.

Good luck!

My 2 sons have been accepted to start at Shrewsbury House in years 3 and 5 for Sept 2019. They are both very sporty and very academic.
The school has very little reviews on the internet. Any feedback will be appreciated!!
