Question for primary teachers (or anyone else that might know!)

I know I'll find out eventually but while sitting in the bath just thought I'd ask on here!

Generally, in terms of literacy and numeracy, what do you expect children to be able to do at the end of reception?

GDK Do you want to know:

"All children by the end of reception should be able to ..."
or "By the end of reception the average child will be able to ...."?

How old is your ds1? Because that makes a big difference too at this stage.

Gobbledigook · 23/09/2005 20:17

I guess what the average child could do.

Ds1 is 4 yr 5 months on entry to reception.

Have a look at the Early Learning Goals if you are in England, it is a document that clearly mentions what children should attain on average. Not all children will reach all elements and achieve it.

Ok, thanks!

this is a site with a good summary

LOl at 'ask questions about why things happen and how things work' - blimey, will it get worse??

Count reliably up to 10, recognise numbers 1-9, find one more or one less on numbers up to 10, that sort of level for numeracy.

Gobbledigook · 23/09/2005 20:25

He can pretty much do all the mathematical ones already, and more, so not worried about that (have been told he's very quick with his numbers). I guess I was interested to know whether they can generally read at the end of reception and what kind of thing - i.e. long sentences or just things like 'the red ball'.

Ds2 can count reliably up to 10 and he's 2!! I'm surprised that's all they aim for in 5 yr olds.

Fish and chips have arrived! Thanks for the link - I will look more later

"whether they can generally read" ... blimey, how long is a piece of string?! What a question!

Some children are barely reading at all at the end of reception (especially the younger ones), but still go on to be successful fluent readers - they just don't get the hang of it very quickly. Most children will be reading at least "the red ball" level. Some will be reading very fluently.

Just for clarity I should point out I'm not a primary teacher - I know you know that, but someone else reading this might not know that.

at your fish and chips!
