DH,ds 6 yr2 and I are probably going to have to move house because of my job. I am earner DH sahd. We will have to move DS school, he will be sad to leave scholl which he loves amd friends but is a sociable adaptable child so am sure he will be fine.

Does any one have any advice how we manage it. Do we ring school and say have you got place or local authority? If I have to move mid term is it better that he and dh stay in present house so he can start in new school new term

he will be fine. even arriving mid term.

Phone LEA and ask where there are spaces.

Then research the schools.

Look out for feeder schools to juniors/seniors. As you will be moving soon, you should also ask about admissions to juniors, as you may have missed the cut off date.

LAs are now responsible for in-year admissions so you contact them to arrange a place for your son. You will only need to worry about admissions to juniors if you move to one of the few areas that has middle schools. The main problem you will have is that you may well find that most schools are already full, so you will have a limited choice of schools for your son.

You may not find that all the decent ones are full...where I live there is a massive scrum for the best schools and I discovered a little village school which has an almost utstanding Ofsted...gorgeous setting lovely staff...it was not full because it was JUST out of the cmfortable travel range fo many people...4 miles from city centre...which I thought reasonable....we never took the place in the end thoug as DD got a scolarship...but just so you think a bit furthe afield.

Thats true SH at moment we live 200 yds in county border so DS goes to school (1mile) in our county 2 miles into neighbouring county is fabulous tiny village school we thought about it but for arange of reasons chose in county one (DS big personality needs environment to support that that doesn't give him opportuntiy to take over and also feeder school for very good secondary whereas other county school not so good

One of the tough things I found moving house is having decided which city or region (Exeter / Devon in my case) you need to move to, finding the local areas or neighbourhoods with good schools. Lots of sites let you put in a postcode and find out about nearby schools, but it takes time to do this for all neighbourhoods.

As well as a Dad, I'm also a web developer, so I built the site I wanted to see. My friends all wanted the same thing so I ended up launching it as schoolbrowser.co.uk. Its helped me to choose the right place for my family. Just wish the house prices were lower :-(
