Any good maths apps for i-pod?

Hi,

Just had a year 8 parents evening. The maths teacher said it would help if my daughter revisited her number work to sharpen up. Her primary school had been very hot on times tables but she's just got lazy and over reliant on the calculator now she's in secondary school. I just wondered if anyone can recommend an app as the i-pod is her current obsession so she might just use it.

Thanks

Is it an iPod Touch? There are some maths Apps for iPhones, and alsmost all of those should work on iPod Touch, but I don't think there are any for just ordinary iPods.

Oh yes, sorry. It's an i-pod touch.
I just wondered if there was anything similar to nintendo DS brain-training. She's hardly touched her DS since having the i-pod so she's more likely to use an app on that.

I looked at some but she's 12 so one aimed at primary school children might not be suitable. Ideally I should just get her reciting her tables again, but I can just imagine her face. Ha.

For times tables, there is this one, which I first saw here but have since had recommended in school newsletter as well. It seems good for older children as well as younger, and it is a game so might appeal more than chanting. There is a section on the App Store called education and you might find some there.

Thank you for that, it looks perfect for her. I'll look at the and see if I can find the education section of the app store.

Can't you tell I don't have an I-pod? I'm a bit clueless about them.

If you open iTunes, there is a menu down the lefthand side, and you will see iTunes Store. If you click on that, it takes you to the iTunes store, and then at the top, there is a menu where you will find App Store. On the right, there are quick links for different categories, and one of them is Back to School, which then has different subjects listed. Or, up where it says App Store, there is a little triangle at the right, and if you click on that, you get a menu of all the different categories of the store, including Education. But the education section has anything vaguely educational, including loads of random stuff, rather than specifically school-related things.

You can also try searching on the App Store for 'times tables' or 'mental maths' or 'number bonds' or whatever aspect you want her to work on. If you click on them, they also show you what other Apps people who have downloaded that one have also downloaded, which can sometimes give you ideas.

I got one for ds called pop math. It says it's for age 4+. I've been on it and you can change the settings to higher or lower numbers and have +-/x questions or just stick to one. It's 59p or there is a lite version for free.

Pairs of balloons float around the screen and you have to pop the 2 that go together. For example, there'll be a balloon with 7 on and one with 3+4 so that is a pair so you need to pop those 2 one after the other.

Brilliant, Thanks to all of you for your help.

I'm going to get her the times tables clock that popcracklesnap suggested and the pop maths. Still looking through the education apps.
Would it be best if I buy her an i-Tunes voucher for these apps? I don't fancy putting my card details into her i-pod.

You set a password for the credit card. And then you can change it later, if you are foolish enough to have started with "that one you always use, Mummy". The one that is used so often a child of 5 can learn it....

You can also buy them through the iTunes on your computer, rather than on her iPod, and then sync it.(She will know how to do this, I'm sure!!).

Perhaps also worth reminding that these games might not compete with the 'real' games that you can get - children aren't likely to choose to play some maths game isntead of Angry Birds or whatever they enjoy, and there are loads of good things available. But on the other hand, playing something on the iPod is better than sitting there doing maths problems or flashcards or whatever - so that's more the comparison you might need to make.

I agree cloudsaway, there are so many fun apps available. I suppose I'm hoping that having a few maths related ones haunting her each time she turns the i-pod on might just prod her into 10 mins of revising her maths.
Her maths teacher pointed out to her that it's up to her to revise her tables. I'm hoping that if she notices some benefits she might stick at it. (Wishful thinking).
I've emailed her a voucher from my email address to hers, finger crossed that's safe enough.

Thanks all for your help.

I bought both these apps for my ipod, and although the DSs do prefer Angry birds, they will play the maths ones without being prompted, as a (short) break from all the mindless violence. They are 7 and 8.
