Do you think it's too much to expect.....

DD age 8 (just gone into Y4) to remember when her music lessons are in school and to get herself there?

She has missed both flute and piano lessons this week because she wasn't sure of the time and as one of them should have happened in playtime she got playing and totally forgot.

I'm unsure myself whether she should be able to get herself there or not by herself.

What do you think?

I had to remember when I was that age (and 9/10 did).

yes. i used to forget mine when i was 12!

I managed age 9- but maybe ask the teacher to remind her until it's routine?

Blossomhill · 15/09/2005 21:29

Well my nearly 8 year old would be useless at remembering tbh.

I even have to remind him to brush his teeth in the morning LOL

sparlover · 15/09/2005 21:30

yeah actually, i used to forget mine because they were a different time every week!

i think if they had been same time i'd have been ok

I think you should mention it to the head teacher - in my dd's school they send the previous child to find the next if they've forgotten. Music lessons are so expensive - why should the teachers sit there and do nothing at your expense? I don't think it is reasonable to expect an 8 y o to remember every week, particularly at playtime. My dd draws a violin on her hand and the time to help her remember.

I thought it was just me being over the top in thinking it was too much!

It seems to be the routine that they have to remember themselves. I will get DD to draw on her hand, I like that idea!

Some of the music teacher's come to 'collect' their children but some don't and of course DD has the ones that don't.

I agree about not paying for them to sit there doing nothing BUT as DD is on a music scholarship and one instrument the school pays for I can't imagine they are going to continue letting her miss it for long

We write things like this up on the board in the classroom right up to year 6. maybe you should ask the teacher. I think year 4 is too young to expect them to remember.

At dd's school they are expected to remember (Yr 4, age 8) and wear a watch for that very purpose.

I always try to remind her that morning that its "piano day" or whatever but her memory is better than mine with regard to these things.
