My dd is just 7. We're quite picky about what she sees on TV but we were caught by surprise when Victoria Wood mentioned 'a couple having sex' on TV the other night. I glanced across at her & she did a 'oh how rude' face so I asked her what it meant. After a lot of pursuading (I probably made too big a deal of it but I really wanted to know what she knew!) She eventually told me it meant a man & lady kissing & cuddling 'for a really long time' (explanation courtesy of one of her friends, slightly younger but more advanced!).
I feel I need some help in the form of a good book to hand over if the subject comes up again!

I'd be interested in a book for this age too, for ds1!

bumping it...........

there is a really fun book by Babette Cole called Mama laid an Egg. It's a really comic alternative way of looking at how babies are made.

With a 4 year old who has been asking questions (and getting answers) for nearly a year, I found Mummy Laid An Egg really good, but it might be a bit young for a 7 year old.

Claire Rayner's The Body Book is good, it isn't only about sex, it's about how the entire body works and sex is treated in just the same way as everything else. It's matter-of-fact and quite funny in places but it does the job!

Thanks to those who have replied, thought I'd 'bump it up' for the weekend and see if anyone else has any thoughts?

I had to explain gay to my 7 (almost 8) year old the other day but he was fine with it. Could do with a book on sex for him too as hehas asked about this - had the whole 'so do you swallow dad's seed' thing I tried to tell him but would rather he had better info tbh.

jampots · 17/09/2005 09:57

well ulysys - do you swallow dad's seed?

Ulysees · 17/09/2005 11:18

ermmm yes but can't tell him that! another book entirely pmsl.

I bought DD1 (who is 7) "Mummy laid an egg!" as she had been asking lots of questions - how does the sperm get to the egg etc. She read the book through on her own, then read it aloud to her 4 year old sister (who was transfixed) before handing it back to me and saying "Yes, I think that's perfectly clear now, thank you Mummy!"

Tanzie. Think I'll get this book for ds1 then give it to ds2 when he can read though no doubt the same thing will happen in our house.
