What sort of books do/did you read to your 2 yr old?

DD turned 2 a couple of months ago. At the moment she likes books that have about 1-2 sentences on each page like the Peppa pig books or sometimes books with a rhythmic pattern but not that many words.

Is this about average for her age or should I be trying some more challenging books.

TBH this is as much for me as for her. She always chooses the same books and I'm really bored of reading them now but don't want to push her if she's not ready.

Rumble in the Jungle and Commotion in the Ocean are great - the rhymes are really good.
also, Lost and Found/Way Back Home.
When we're stuck, I go onto Amazon and look up sellers ratings based on age, find that can be helpful as well as seeing the front cover to see if think illustrations will be liked.

Shirley Hughes are fantastic and Julia Donaldson, also lots of the Walker books, you can get very cheap collections through the book club magaziines (the one you don't have to join!). Books with rhyming, funny voices etc go down very well, like 'Going on a Bear Hunt'. You can definately read books with more than a few words! Favourite book of all dd's toddler years was 'So much' (can't remember the author but walker book) about an african carribean family each arriving home and they all love the baby 'so much', its really lovely.

DS is just 2, and at the moment prefers the pictures to the story in books. I got him a simple factual type book called 'my first body book' (I think) and every night he asks for "Body book, body book!" It has things like a picture of a person with each body part labelled, and then pages for the different senses, so the Nose page has a picture of various smells, flowers, exhaust fumes, breakfast, baby sitting on a potty Grin

He just loves pointing out all the different things on each page. He's got rumble in the jungle as well and won't let me read the rhymes but just wants to find all the ants!

My DS loved (and still loves) Dr. Seuss. The rhyming helped him with his words, and he loved the madcap, funny world.

May I suggest: Mr. Men & Little Miss books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, all of Julia Donaldson's books (The Gruffalo etc). Happy reading!!
