Extended Maths at YR7 - bit worried about future?

DS has started his Grammar School and is loving it.
He is in an extended maths set, today I found out that the maths is yr 8 curriculum and as ds finds it easy they may extend him further integrating yr 9 worksheets too.
Does this mean they will want him to sit his gcses early? If not then what does he do for work in later yrs?
Am bit worried about this...

I would assume he will sit the gcse early and maybe do an higher one (if there is one)
I think you need to talk to school.

sounds fab! they clearly don't want him to be bored. If he sits his GCSEs early... then great. He will have room for other subjects. As long as he is happy I wouldn't worry. What a "good" problem to have.

Just be proud of him and encourage him. If he finds it too much, they can always scale it back down.

What a clever boy!

not necessarily Piffle - although well done Master Piffle.

Last year when dd was in year 7 she was doing yr 9 maths which she could just about manage. Im pretty sure she wont be sitting them early but I guess it depends on the school.

You must be very proud

mumtosomeone · 08/09/2005 12:46

think they can sit them at end of year 9 before they go on to their other gcse work?

piffle · 08/09/2005 12:51

I am very proud of course he is something of a prodigy at maths, he got 99% in his SATS too , and reads gcse level revision guides for fun?
Christ knows where he gets it from - I mean I was competent but detested it and his dad is a dyslexic musician who spectacularly screwed up at school esp in maths!
I pondered enrolling in a GCSE adults maths course so I could "know" what was what and have a conversation with him....

Piffle - I would go and ask the school early about the provision for children in yr10 & 11 who sit GCSE maths early. I was quite surprised by my discovies at a local school (comp not grammar). Some of the top set Maths class sit GCSE Maths just a year early. But for the following year they are still in the same class with people who didn't sit it: ie the lessons are focused on GCSE. And they re-sit the GCSE that year ... even if they got an A*! And there is no opportunity at all for them to do anything extended during that year.

Anyway, I'm glad your ds is enjoying his new school.

I will perhaps ring the school tomorrow and enquire and come back to this... I have no issues about him being extended to a really high level it as as you say, the problem of what does he do after GCSE's?

Think positive: If they have extended maths sets at yr7, and allowing access to materials from +2yrs, then they may well have strategies for what to do with them if they are post-GCSE at 14 or 15 ... and if not, asking about it now will give them chance to think about it! LOL.

dilemma solved
they do a statistics GCSE in YR 10 and then do the maths in yr 11 along with everyone else, this circumvents the what do they do the eyar after issue when theyc an specialise a little more with maths...

Roisin, the idea of re-sitting exams would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.
Great to hear your ds is doing so well. Can't say dd has reported back too much at all about her first week at grammar school!

Miaou · 12/09/2005 22:51

piffle that's what i did - sat my maths o level a year early then did an o level in statistics (yes I am that old, lol!!)

I will sound really thick but what is the difference between grammar and comp schools?
