I've been asked to do a lecture - I never did anything like that before....please help me?

I know my subject fairly well

I am guessing it goes like this:
Setting out what I am expecting them to learn
Tell them about it
Check they understood
Setting out what they learnt
Give handouts

Am I even close?

What else am I supposed to do?

yy to music.

No to talking in pairs (sorry pointy)- the element of fun is lost.

Not practical to run round the hall, though, tether. I've never run into corners during a lecture

If you are nervous, make sure you go to the lecture room beforehand, familiarise yourself with the layout, the technology and the feel of standing up at the front.

And deep breathing helps ... Wink

Is it in a hall? How many in the audience?

KatyMac · 25/09/2010 06:42

Guys, I am panicking because I have been briefly asked 'to do a talk on risk' but that's all I know so far

You have really reassured me & when if they formally ask me I promise I will find out about the room & the layout.....honest

Then I will come back on here & panic & you calm me down again

Thanks eveyone........

Actually I think I'm more scared that I was before

They might forget they asked

Ummm, how is
Parachute from a plane
Jump off a 10 ft wall
eat a pill you found
eat a berry you don't recogise
eat an apple given to you when trick or treating
Pick up a heavy hot pan & strain the water off the potatoes
Go white water rafting
Drink 10 bottles of Wkd
eat a raw sausage

relevant to risk in the confinement of a BTEC in Childcare? I dont think any nursery or childminder would even consider letting their mindees jump out of planes or drink Wkd? Confused Or am I missing something?

It isn't but the idea I would develop is that if they don't take risks/aren't allowed to take risks from an early age they will not understand the risks they may get presented with at a later time in their lives

For example there is a significant number of 16-20 year old lads who get seriously injured jumping off 10ft walls (often while drunk) however if they had done more walking on 1ft, 3ft and 4 ft walls they would know they could be hurt by jumping of higher walls (apart from the whole drunk bit)

I see.
My 5 year old does not have risk sensors in the same way as his older brother. He was a climber from he could stand up and put weight on his legs. (he broke his arm when he was 12 months old) Now, he has no fear in tackling the other boys at football, he races right in, not worried about getting hurt. It does not bother him. He loves downhill skiing, he launches himself down the slopes, full speed, does not do any speedstopping turns, and will lift his leg up, so he balances down the hill on only one leg. I am scared for him. Yet, if anybody is to climb up a 10 ft wall, and consequently fall down, it would be him. Or maybe it wouldnt be, because he has developed the skills to keep himself safe? What do you think?

On a practical note, I would second the suggestion that you give handouts with the basic notes on your lecture at the start. That'll stop them from furiously scribbling as you talk and will make them more receptive.

KatyMac · 25/09/2010 09:37

It's not whether he would or he wouldn't - at least I don't think it is. It's about whether he would consider it a "safe risk" to take - some of my examples are "safe risks" and some were "unsafe" & I think he is likely to have a very acute awareness of what he considers safe or unsafe; whereas another child might do all those things willy-nilly without any thought
