Gah! Please tell me quick where in the garment you put the name label...

... as dh very kindly just said to me, after I ironed in all the labels, that IHO the name should be above the hem, whereas I put it at the back, under the clothing label IYSWIM. Seemed the most logical place to me, but then I am German and in Germany we don't do school uniform or name labels or suchlike, so have I made a terrible mistake?

should be above the label on the collar I would have thought so you can eg pick up a jumper and just look in the back and see that your little honey has brought home the wrong bloody jumper again

starlover · 02/09/2005 23:05

it doesn't matter.
i would always sew them/iron them to the label that was in the clothes... sounds right to me

Twiglett · 02/09/2005 23:05

tbh it really doesn't matter though as long as its there

expatkat · 02/09/2005 23:11

I'm so glad someone else asked this question. . .I'm with you emkana--this is all so FOREIGN to me. Ds, when kitted out in uniform, looks like he's out of Dickens. I keep looking around for someone to share my irony about these preposterous looking school uniforms, but there's no one. I'll have to e-mail a digital pic to my friends in the US and we'll all have a virtual laugh.

LIZS · 03/09/2005 16:20

We have specific instructions for pe stuff to be on left chest or left hem of shorts, other than that I'd go for centre back or on the size/wash label wherever is more obvious.

Janh · 03/09/2005 16:27

When I used them they went where you put them, emkana. (If you have the sew-in type, you can just stitch the ends and it makes a hanging loop which is useful.)

I just write on the label now, with a permanent marker - new shirts tend to have a blank label to write in way down the side seam somewhere.

epk, I can imagine how uniform looks to you, lol!

WideWebWitch · 03/09/2005 16:35

You don't, you buy a laundry pen adn write ON the label in the item. Quicker, easier, cheaper.

Tortington · 03/09/2005 17:09

someone gave me a great tip. i thought i would share it even if you dont want me to.

with expensive coats. undo a seem and put a lable in and sew it up. put your normal lable so your kid knows which coat is theirs.

then when it gets knicked and the lable is cut out then there is the unknown lable in the seem.

ofcourse getting the coat to prove there is another lable in the seem is soemthing you wil have to work out

firestorm · 03/09/2005 19:23

i use a laundry pen too lifes too short to spend it sewing/ironing on labels.

twirlaround · 03/09/2005 20:04

custardo you have been reading too much John le Carre

swedishmum · 04/09/2005 22:08

So where does it go on hockey socks? I've opted for vertically in the bit that folds over. Will my child be ridiculed? Can you tell I'm nervous about her first day at secondary school??

QueenOfQuotes · 04/09/2005 22:16

where do I put them (iron on) on standard (Matalan) school socks???

swedishmum · 04/09/2005 22:24

Lots of my friends had them on the soles of their feet, or laundry markers with initials on the bottom. I'm lazymum (should change my name as I'm not Swedish at all) so I just bulk buy the cheapest socks I can find and don't panic when they get lost.

nooka · 04/09/2005 22:41

I just write it into the label on the clothes (they all seem to have a space). He has come back occasionally with someone else's clothes, we just sent them back with him to school. Have never labeled socks - life is too short! But then he is in infants and doesn't have sports socks. I just assume that the socks he comes home with are his!

patch · 05/09/2005 06:23

We have to label everything, they even have uniform checks and we gets notes home reminding us that this and that needs labelling. But that means at least 5 pairs of tights, 5 pairs of ankle socks, 5 knickers, 5 vests, sports socks, pe top, pe shorts, 2 summer dresses, blazer, pinafore, 4 blouses, swimming costume, ballet socks and leotard. So little of last year's uniform still fits her so nearly a completely new set for this year. Also, did not know what the weather was going to be so prepare for winter and summer uniforms. If anyone finds an iron on label that stays on or sets up a business sewing on labels I would consider using it.

LIZS · 05/09/2005 08:11

We have to label everything down to underwear too and I'm starting from scratch with 2. For socks have got the sew ins, folded in half like a loop and sewn on inside of cuff with just a few stitches. The iron on has come out of dd's tunic already (was on the lining so perhaps not such good adhesion) but the others seem ok so far. my fingers ahce from a frantic sewing weekend as also having to turn over blazer cuffs, sew school badge onto it etc. Now down to ds' shirts, loops for the shower and swim towels and underwear.

wangle99 · 05/09/2005 09:07

We also have to label everything, the labels have to be sewn in (iron on not permitted) and the labels have to have red stitching shrug.

I haven't sussed the labels in underwear yet, DD says they itch her.

lucy01 · 05/09/2005 13:42

patch try the easyname tapes (link on mn) - practically indestructible. One went on the wrong coat dd1 has still to foregive me and can't get it off - well i would have just had to rename it for dd2 anyway so saved myself some time in the future

at least they are easy to iron on socks etc. I was never very good at needlepoint - dropped it like a stone for double maths (sad i know but i'm an accountant now - let that we a lesson to all your daughters) - so the idea of sewing 30 name tapes on was as appealing as having my finger nails pull out.

we are supposed to use cash's no 9 sew on tapes - well i'm up to my eyeballs working to pay the fees so its a bit of a case of tough luck. if they are going to get het up about name tapes then i think that they have lost the plot.

RTKangaMummy · 05/09/2005 13:44

sew sock labels vertically down the back of the leg iyswim

geogteach · 05/09/2005 13:50

What are MIL's for! I charged mine with the important task of labelling all DS1's uniform for me but she drew the line at socks so I think they may remain nameless.

expatkat · 05/09/2005 17:28

ME TOO, geoteach!!!! MIL is coming by today with a duffle bag full of uniforms with name label sewn in. Embarassingly I have no idea how to sew PLUS I'm on deadline at work. Yes indeed. . .what are MILs for? (Mine is kinda out of the picture, voluntarily, so I feel especially justified in asking for this favor.) But I confess I feel guilty, as she said it took hours to finish the job.

Passionflower · 05/09/2005 18:17

Patch, do you live in guernsey...

I have same thing plus have to be sewn on - no laundry markers or iron on allowed. Shoes also have to be named.

aloha · 05/09/2005 18:20

I'd rather lose all ds's clothes than do bl**dy labels. And I mean that.

LIZS · 05/09/2005 18:25

Ah, but am hoping that the fact that everything is labelled will detract from the non-regulation blazer et al that we are sending in ! Hopefully we at least won't be first for the Letter Home reminding us. At £20 a dress and £18 a jumper I don't really want to lose dd and ds' stuff just yet.

alexsmum · 05/09/2005 18:28

i sew them on the waistband of trousers, the hem(in the bit that tucks in)on t-shirts so they don't irritate neck and on the neck of jumpers.
