School sends kids in jeggings home

Lilaclion · 10/09/2010 09:45

I've just read in my local paper that a secondary school has had to send home 60 pupils for turning up to class in jeggings instead of school uniform trousers.

Am I being a bit Amish by wondering what parent in their right mind would think that jeggings are a suitable alternative to school trousers?

Amish here too.

Leggings and their ilk are underwear.

I would not send my daughter to school in her underwear.

Francagoestohollywood · 10/09/2010 17:42

Oh I'd love a jumper with a built in hat!

pagwatch · 10/09/2010 17:44

what would a collective of jeggings be?

I would love a jumper with a built in hat !

ShowOfHands · 10/09/2010 17:49

Collective of jeggings must be an Abomination surely.

Miggsie · 10/09/2010 17:49

Jeggings: not suitable clothing because anyone with a bum over a certain size when walking looks like they have a pair of puppies fighting under a thin sheet of cotton jersey.

Well cut trousers: generally comfortable and practical.

I prefer a nice long skirt myself.

ShowOfHands · 10/09/2010 17:51

Yes, I think I'm right.

Here comes Stella McCartney and co showcasing an Abomination of jeggings. Stella is wearing her trademark pet cat that doubles as a hat and last season's handbag-shoe.

Bonsoir · 10/09/2010 17:52

"I prefer a nice long skirt myself."

Abayas are just fab for hiding flab and are marginally less hideous than British school uniforms Smile

Francagoestohollywood · 10/09/2010 17:53

Talk to me about treggings.

seeker · 10/09/2010 17:54

lol @ durga.

Maybe there should be special night schools so the fat ones can get an education under cover of darkness without offending anyonewithout offending anyone?

loftyjen · 10/09/2010 17:56

I didn't go to Sam Ward but went to school in Haverhill (albeit long, long ago!).

To those wondering the school definitely has a uniform policy. Can't believe the parents have been so dippy as to believe that jeggings would be ok.
shudders as realises some of the parents could be former schoolmates

DaisySteiner · 10/09/2010 17:56

Ah, I see it was a school in Haverhill. That doesn't surprise me at all. It does have a certain reputation, and no, it isn't for the local residents' sartorial elegance Wink

pagwatch · 10/09/2010 17:57

Grin an abomination of jeggings

yes.

undercovamutha · 10/09/2010 18:01

A sad indictment of my fashion sense is that I bought jeggings for DD and was very pleased with them cos I can't get jeans to fit her properly (builders bum issues!). DD refuses to wear them and has accused me of deliberately trying to make her look silly (she is 4!).

Sad to be be put in place by sartorially aware 4yo!

EvilTwins · 11/09/2010 14:19

We have a new uniform at the school I teach in this term. We are therefore being extra strict about it, in the (vain) hope that the students will quickly get so tired of being told to sort their ties out and tuck their shirts in (we used to have polo shirts and sweatshirts) that they will just do it and avoid the nagging. One member of staff has the job of chasing up kids who are not complying (she's not a teacher or a TA, BTW, before anyone wonders if this is good use of a trained professional's time...) and she is obsessed with jeggings. She sniffs them out, and no one can get past her jegging radar. I had a Yr 10 girl in my class last week, who was apparently wearing them. I didn't notice (oops - my jegging radar (jeggdar?) was obviously malfunctioning) but she was duly sniffed out and sent home well before lunchtime.

durga · 11/09/2010 15:29

I have just walked through Marks' and they have a whole display dedicated to jeggings. What is the world coming to. In disgust I am having my tea and scone in Lewis'.

WillowFae · 11/09/2010 22:01

"It?s not always easy for parents to buy the right kind of clothing."

Don't they sell school trousers really cheap in all of the big supermarkets?

Meglet · 11/09/2010 22:03

LOL at 'jeggdar'.

katkouta · 12/09/2010 21:15

Alright Terry Tibbs Francagoestohollywood Treggings are a bit like jeggings but not as tight,a little more like trousers than leggings :)

Francagoestohollywood · 12/09/2010 21:33

Thanks Katkouta Smile. So treggings actualy exist. I was hoping they were SOH's invention...

Panzee · 12/09/2010 21:36

Isn't a jumper with a hat called a hoodie?

Panzee · 12/09/2010 21:36

Treggings are ski pants to us 80s girls. And jeggings are spray on jeans, like those hair metal bands used to wear.
