Is anyone else excited about their child's GCSEs?

My dd has just started year 10, and we've had a really nice evening as a family discussing her possible choices for an artist to study in Art. And I'm re reading To Kill a Mockingbird...

Am I very sad indeed and alone? Or is this sort of thing a guilty pleasure for others as well?

I am very excited about my new GCSE and A Level groups.

My DS1 is in yr 11 and yep, I've been really enjoying him doing his GCSEs!

Not sad at all. Dp actually re-read several books in order to talk to dd1 about them (I am an English teacher so didn't need to re-read!). And I love sneaking peeks at her gorgeous art sketch book.

I am just sad that she didn't choose History, as any excuse for museum trips would make me v happy!

Phew - not completely alone then! My dd IS doig History - I held my breath while she made chose between History and Geography, and uttered a slient cheer when she came down on the right one. I'm sad she chose Expressive Arts rather than Music, but I suppose you can't win them all!

dd has started year 10 too. She has chosen astronomy GCSE & I keep trying to sneek a peep in her textbook. So you're not alone.

:) The worst thing is, now she's beginning Yr 11, she wishes she'd done History instead of Art!

Oh - I think ages and ages ago we talked about The Handmaid's Tale (I was called Janeite then). DD1 read it last year and loved it, so would deffo rec to your dd if she hasn't read it yet.

Waiting to hear if ds is doing triple science or not...hope so.

Another saddo here. I nearly jumped with joy when dd brought back a copy of Pride & Prejudice - first set book for english gcse. I remember doing it in 4th year too - happy days Smile

Mine finally chose History over geography but now I'm wondering if that was wise as her history exam results weren't exactly wonderful. She does put in a lot of work when she likes the period/topic so fingers crossed it will be OK

DS has had a project for photography to do in the summer before he even started his course. He is taking it as a twilight so it is going to be all extra work. He had some really good ideas ie recreating famous album covers but they proved to be too much work in the end.

DS is also doing triple science, history, german and electronics. It's going to be an interesting 2 years getting him to do all that course work without too much hassle.

I'm getting all excited about DS (Y5) doing the Tudors. For once something where I might know something he doesn't. (on account of wasting the last few months reading Wolfe Hall, the other Boleyn Girl etc., and David Starkey's young Henry VIII.)

bruffin · 07/09/2010 23:18

I asked DS what book he was doing for english and he said he thought it was called "The Five Pillers"
Only book I can find is The Five Pillars of Wisdom which is RE.

So far my dd is doing To Kill a Mockingbird and Journey's End. Both good - but rather 'safe" choices, aren't they? I'm sure they were choices when i did O level English a lifetime ago!

ds doing Great Expectations which I did for A level and loved.

Am looking forward to teaching him his RE GCSE from this weekend. A* or bust (no pressure then!)

bruffin · 08/09/2010 08:42

I did To Kill a Mocking Bird for O'levels back in 79.

There was a really interesting programme about it a couple of months ago to celebrate the 50th anniversary of it being published.
To Kill a Mocking Bird at 50 Hopefully the BBC might repeat it.

BelligerentGhoul · 08/09/2010 19:32

Dd1 is doing A Kestrel For A Knave. I am not at all impressed as a) I think it's dated badly and b) I don't think it provides sufficient 'meat' for really high quality essays.

But it would be completely irrational for me to moan to the teacher, wouldn't it? :)

She loved To Kill A Mocking Bird.
