Help! Partitioning

outnumberedbymyboys · 17/08/2010 18:19

DS1 is supposed to be practising partitioning over the summer. I only know the 'old' addition methods and he cannot remember how to partition at all. I have bought a book but all it told me was why the old method does not work. Please could someone give a practical example of how to partition so that I can work with him?

23+14
20+3+10+4
20+10+3+4
30+7
37

The long version!

You don't need to add to practise partitioning - it's used as a tool to help calculations later.

Partitioning is just simple place value e.g. 14 - 10 + 4
37 - 30 + 7
114 - 100 + 10 + 4

Damn my keyboard, those dashes were meant to be equals signs.

You might also look at alternatives
eg partitioning to 5
7+6
5+2+5+1
10+3
13

or partitioning with number bonds
14+8
14+6+2
20+2
22
Which sort might depend on age/school policy

Sorry, Feenie is quite right, your DS needs to understand partitioning as place value before using partitioning to add

Thankyou -this makes more sense. Will try this tomorrow. DS is going into year 3 and apparentely should be able to add up using partitioning. It is all very confusing!

Hope this helps!

Been doing the start of partioning today with DD. Exercises were all similar put 64 into tens and units you have 60 tens and 4 units.
Funny thing is I have A at A level Maths but find myself having to learn these techniques before DD does them. Role of Differentiation I don't think they have changed that.

Lizcat

Similar as you. Have to learn the techniques first and have AO Maths. Infuriating as was rubbish at maths at school (9 schools, 9 different systems) until I got myself sorted out for GCSE's. Thought I had maths cracked!
