I love reading the children Meg and Mog, Dr. Seuss and Pat Hutchins. Have you any other suggestions?

Little Bear and Brambly Hedge are lovely.

soothepoo · 23/07/2003 11:08

King Rollo, Elmer, Mr Men/Little Miss, The Very Noisy Night and The Very Busy Day, Meg & Mog

Fav. of dd (14 months) for a long time has been Dear Zoo! I also really like Maisy books and the Antony Browne books for the wonderful pictures.

Dahlia · 23/07/2003 12:10

DD2's favourite is My naughty little sister, we must have read it a dozen times. Also Dr Seuss, Magic Faraway Tree, The lion the witch and the wardrobe, and she is mad about Spike Milligan's poems! www - I too cried at Charlotte's Web, and am waiting til dd2 can read it herself as I would lose it completely if I had to read it aloud to her!

DS1 is nearly three. His favourite books are:
Platypus (Chris Ridell)
Tim and Ginger (and all the Tim books, can't remember the author)
The Tiger Who Came to Tea
Gruffalo
Mr Gumpy

princesspeahead · 23/07/2003 13:48

www we are just at the beginning of it - a chapter a night - so nothing too traumatic has happened yet (apart from wilbur nearly being killed at birth!)
I'm expecting a few tears later on though!

Helen Cooper's The Baby Who Wouldn't Go To Sleep is a definite favourite with ds who's 2.5, and Small by Clara someone or other. The Baby Who ... sends dp to sleep if he's in the room when we read it, which has its advantages! Thomas The Tank Engine also features but that's OK as I love 'em. Heckedy Peg is the annoying one in our house, the one that makes us groan when he asks for it, but at least the pictures are good. Making up our own versions of fairytales is also good (Bear and The Three Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Wolf, you get the picture) And finally, the one that used to make me cry until the constant repetition made my heartstrings insensitive, Nobody by Mick Inkpen. Oh, and Dogger by Shirley Hughes.

Yet another vote for Hairy McLary. We got a book with 5 of the stories in it. Other favourites have included Lullabyhullabaloo, Newton and anything with loads of repetition. We have hundreds of books which my son adores - I can't resist the stuff that the Book People and other sales reps bring to my work! Some are definite bedtime favourites but some are good for pop ups/ illustrations or just reading all by yourself! Still a wee bit scared of Scarface Claw for some reason!!

SoupDragon · 23/07/2003 17:55

Scar Face Claw - the Toughest Tom in Town! DS1 loves him. Does a great snarly face when we get to SFCs bits in the books

Love the 'Bear' books by Jez Alborough (sp?), great fun to read and the kids loved them too. The Alburghs 'Peepo' made me think of my grandmother's house, so I loved that one too.

mousie · 23/07/2003 21:13

the best lullaby-type book is Goodnight Moon - can't remember who it's by but a good kids bookshop will know. my two and a half year old daughter can recite it off by heart and reads it to her teddy after we have leave her to go to sleep. it is a wonderful discovery, clever, sweet and just the thing before bedtime.

Claireandrich · 23/07/2003 21:23

15mo DD loves the Touch and Feel Farm Book (from Mothercare) - and has done for months.

Just packing her books this afternoon and she has so many, I was really surprised. She must have nearly 40 board books alone of various sizes and types, with 'proper' books on top! Miond, she does adore books and will still for ages looking at them.

Enid · 23/07/2003 22:06

Agree about Goodnight Moon, its lovely and I am enjoying reading it again to my 9 month old. She also loves Sometimes I like to Curl Up in a Ball and Spots Farm. In fact she likes all books, as long as she can pull and chew them, she's not very discriminating

jennifersofia · 23/07/2003 22:32

'Goodnight Moon' is written by Margaret Wise Brown.
'The Hutchinson Treasury of Stories to Read Aloud' is a brilliant collection of old and new favs, with (v.importantly) original illustrations. It was the only book we took on a 24 hr flight and it kept her amused for hours!
We're quite into Richard Scarry books at our house - interesting for adult and child, lots of detail and humour.

crazynow · 24/07/2003 09:16

My 3yr old loves, spots bedtime stories book, mr men, the large family stories (about elephants) and a book with nursery rhyms.

snickers · 24/07/2003 19:35

Interesting that noone has mentioned the Winnie the Pooh? I read them to my 12m DD before her nap (but not sure she's actually taking any notice yet), but can't read the last chapter of the last book without crying. Such a wuss!

eidsvold · 24/07/2003 20:05

dd (1 almost!) loves little kipper, possum in the house, wombat stew, we have winnie the pooh bedtime stories and surprisingly Banjo Patterson poetry - Man from Snowy River we had last night.

marypoppins · 25/07/2003 20:49

Thanks for all your ideas. I'm off to the nearest bookshop!

For my 2.5 year old dd: anything with Winnie the Pooh, Babar, Maisy, The Grumpalump, Squeakalot and anything else illustrated by Virginia Miller, especially the Bartholomew and George Series, Snail Trail by Ruth Brown, Blue Kangaroo, Mog, So much by Trish Cooke/Helen Oxenbury, Mr Men.

Lara2 · 27/07/2003 18:43

'Sometimes I like to Curl up in a Ball' - simply gorgeous and 'Fidgety Fish' - brilliant!

MrsS · 28/07/2003 13:35

That's spooky. I was going to write "Sometimes I like to curl up in a ball" and Lara 2 has just recommended the same book.
