Reusable nappies for newborns

Has anyone got any experience using reusable nappies from birth?

I had a really useful chat with someone from a reusable nappy family brand at a baby show who recommended only starting when baby is 8-12 weeks old, to avoid too much hassle in the first post-partum weeks. That sounds sensible, but I'm just worried I'll get into the habit and convenience of the disposables and won't want to switch afterwards!

I would see if you have a local NCT nappy library. The one near me would rent out (for something like a tenner) a big bag of reusable newborn nappies for the first 6 weeks. Then you can see what brands/types you like (there was a mix in the pack), and see if you actually like using reusable, without spending what can be quite a bit of money buying a whole set.

When you see how much better the cloth nappies contain newborn poo explosions you might not see disposables as more convenient!
Just get some pocket nappies, they're the simplest, and while they aren't always the best at wee containment once babies are older, they're fab for the first 6-8 months at least.
It depends on the size of you baby whether you need newborn size I guess, we just started with birth to potty pockets.

We used totsbots sized 2 part nappies with a wrap for the first 6 or so months - so much better at containing poo-nami's than disposable, then we moved on to all in one nappies in birth to potty sizing for daytime and a sized bamboo nappy and mother ease wrap at night. Motherease wraps are the best - totally bomb proof. I used Totsbots mostly with a few others added in. For DC2 we used mostly 2 parters because she was such a heavy wetter. I did a nappy wash load once every 2 days and used a bucket and lid to store them in-between.

We started cloth nappies at day 3. We had muslinz Muslins in the jo fold. She was a 6lber and to get it small enough the initial square needed to be 12 inches. We used rumparooz newborn wraps which cover 4-15lb so great for newborns. Most birth to potty nappies don't fit properly until around 10lb.
We also had some Bambino Mio size 1 wraps but they were a bit big for the first week or 2 and fitted better once she was 7lb

We were planning on switching to pockets nappies when she outgrew her new born nappies but we fell for flat and used her muslinz until she potty trained at 2.5. We needed 2 with a booster for 2-3h absorbance. We definitely got out money's worth out of our muslinz!

I only started when they were around 2 months. I bought a set of nappies I liked after attending a talk run by my local council. But although they were meant to be birth to potty they totally swamped the babies when they were newborn. So I’d have had to buy an alternative for early on. But there was no risk of sticking with disposables because seeing the waste each day meant I couldn’t wait to get their bums in the lovely colourful washable ones. Good luck. It can be tricky to get the hang of it all but I had three kids use them and loved them (the nappies and the kids 🙂).

No advice about make, but switched to disposables when we went away for a month and I was worried about access to laundry facilities. Definitely didn’t get into the habit of it, and it was super easy to switch back. DD didn’t seem to notice/mind either.

We used reusables as soon as we got home from the hospital - we did the Nappy Lady survey and ended up with muslins for the first 6 weeks or so, then moved up into totsbots bamboozle. The muslins have since come in handy for all sorts of uses, so not a waste having bought them even for only a couple of months of use as nappies.

We didn’t buy newborn nappies and just started when he was around 2 weeks and fit into our btp nappies! I think some go smaller than others so and every baby is different so you might just need to keep trying.
We also built up to full time use gradually, starting with one a day, then at home only, and then full time. This made it a bit more manageable for us.

Also we had to use disposables recently and they leaked every single time he pooed, so we were back to cloth as soon as we could!
