Practical household tips good for the environment

I have a lot of random household level questions about what’s best for the environment. These are the small, practical things. Please share your questions too.

Recycling
Can you recycle meat trays/ fruit punnets/ satsuma fruit nets?
Is it better to buy products that come in glass or tins or recycled plastic if you have a choice?
Is it better to put items in unwashed or washed?
Can you use biodegradable plastic bags for food waste in green bin?

Electricity
Do you need to unplug appliances when not used eg, toaster, hob... do they draw electricity when switched off?
It’s a real pain to turn off our tv/ internet overnight (Virgin) as it takes ages to reboot in morning. Is it really worth it?
How do those eco plugs things work? The ones which cut off electricity when applicance not used?

Books
Is it better to buy printed books/ kindle or audible?
What can I do with imperfect children’s books that are not pristine enough for charity shop? Put in recycling? Seems a waste!

Children’s parties
People around here invite whole classes to parties and everyone brings a present valued around £10-20. I find this shocking and personally resent all the gifts my child receives. What can I do?
I buy other children books- is this the best option environmentally? We have a class what’sapp and would love to suggest a no present culture but is that mean?!
What can I do instead of balloons and bubbles?
Ideas for party bags that are not wildflower seeds!

Presents
We only buy 1-2 plastic presents for our children. We never buy little filler presents. We probably have 1/10 of the stuff families we know have. It’s soooo wasteful.
Any ideas besides edibles and books for children that are environmentally friendly?
Are vouchers the best gift for teens? Which shop? I don’t like giving money.

Please share your own questions but keep them practical. I’m not interested in hearing about big things like not having children/ not having a car / disinvestment .... as I don’t have a choice in these things. It’s the little things that I can do easily that I want to know about please.

You will probably need to check with your local council for recycling, they all have slightly different rules (eg, our doesnt recycle soft plastics like yoghurt pots).

For presents that are also useful/not plastic character clothes are good - a jumper is a lot more exciting if it's got Hulk/Elsa on the front.
For teens maybe branded versions of stuff they need anyway like bigger trainers or hobby stuff like football boots/sheet music.
