Just wondered if I should be concerned.

Not selling anything interesting, just designer clothing of dh's and dd's.

Starting cheap and no bids atm BUT quite a few emails from : Russia, Germany,Korea asking if they win can I post the item abroard and how much..

I have gne back to them with a price I think is right looking at RM's site but im now a bit as to why there is so much interest outside of the uk..???

anyone..?

don't know, I'm not a big ebay user, but did sell some Clarks doodles which were unused and the buyer was from Hungary.

maybe the exchange rate makes things very cheap at the moment.

luciemule · 20/06/2010 22:14

Either - they want to sell off and make loads of money - I imagine designer labels are loved in Russia etc but really expensive for the majority to buy or it's the only way they can afford to buy designerwear from the UK.

luciemule · 20/06/2010 22:15

I did buy a few brand new Fat Face tops which were from a woman in Portugal.

pluperfect · 20/06/2010 22:28

Don't worry about it; they are after decent quality stuff, and it is hard to get hold of that kind of thing in some places. I have sold various (baby) things to Russia, Slovakia, Hungary and so on, and am pleased the things went to people who wanted them, and who paid for them!

shhhh · 20/06/2010 22:41

thanks for the quick replies everyone...

I didn't really worry at 1st but then I noticed I had quite a few questions from abroard and then worried that maybe I should be wary.

Mrs Cautious is my name .

I did think, maybe as they are cheap its ideal for people abroard or in places where they aren't so well off...

Thanks again x

By all means be cautious, and definitely geta proof of postage stamped (and offer to do tracked postage, so they can see how much it costs, freak, refuse it, and then be in a weaker position about complaining, if something doesn't arrive, whereas you will have the POP to protect you.)

No need to throw away your caution completely!

funkychunkymunky · 20/06/2010 22:53

According to my DH paypal works differently in foreign countries. Some bidders will win, pay then once posted they will reverse the transaction. Not sure if it's true though...

shhhh · 21/06/2010 09:55

ah right funkychunky.... will keep my eyes open for that happening.. I guess that the thing that worries me..

pluperfect,I have quoted postage and tbh imo its quite high and would put me off as a bidder but guess I don't know what its like to be abroard and pay postage iykwim.
Just hoping it may put them off.

I have quoted as recorded delivery which from what I can see tracks uk only.... Guess its shows its been posted..

Erm, they might be ex-pats like me?

Clothes especially are much more expensive almost everywhere than the UK, even designer stuff.

I am in Italy and have sold bundles of clothes to Germany, Romania, Hungary, all over.

Never ever ever had a problem with foreign ebayers. Only British ones.

Also, despite never sending RD unless specifically asked for by the buyer, have never had stuff get lost going from Italy to any of these places. Again, only stuff I've had postage probs with has been either to or from the UK.

The paypal thing sounds like an urban myth to me. And in any case, if they reverse the transaction (how, exactly? It's all noted on the ebay website, so all you would need to do would be to get ebay to look at the money into, and then out of your account?)

Of course, if you don't want to sell abroad, then just don't. I tend to put all my Boden stuff only on foreign ebay sites because I get more money.

shhhh · 21/06/2010 10:09

Thanks for that bucharest. I guess because I had an issue recently with an ebayer and item going missing etc its kind of put me off..
it shouldn't I know... I guess I should see how it goes.

I seem to have had a lot more more interest from overseas as well in the past year. I think with the way exchange rates are at the moment, foreign buyers can find really good deals on eBay UK.

Bucharest · 21/06/2010 10:30

I think also, ebay is still relatively new as a concept in a lot of countries. Italian friends of mine are astonished at how cheap they can get stuff from the UK for, even with postage. (have a friend who is buying Ralph Lauren polos on a daily basis lol)

Even though ebay exists here, as an Italian site, most of the stuff is on BIN and not that much cheaper than the shops, the whole auction for used stuff isn't really that common, so they are looking for it on the UK site.

(PS Germany is great for selling to- as I said earlier, I have a guy who buys all dd's old clothes, and I've had more than the original price for some of the Boden stuff!)

I am an ebay power sell and sell designer items particularly Burberry. It is far more popular in American and other European countries than in England. Often exchange rates make it less expensive for them to buy from England. I would say 99% of my business in from overseas. A lot of people live in remote areas and would need to travel a long way to buy these things. I have not had any problems sending things abroad definitely less than in the Uk.
Just make sure you use the correct postage and complete customs forms. No customs forms within the EU. If it is expensive then use international signed or similar this cost £3.50 in addition to normal fee. If you risk and it gets lost you could lose a lot of money.

MmeLindt · 21/06/2010 12:41

I agree with Bucharest.

Living in Geneva means that everything is much more expensive, and we just do not get the same selection here. I buy a lot online as it saves me travelling to Lyon in France where I would get a better choice.

Plus in the last couple of years the pound has fallen so much against the Euro that it is much cheaper.

eg. I bought a pair of shoes from Clarks in UK for £60 after trying them on in the shops here for the equivalent of £100. And that was the normal price, not sale price.

pluperfect · 22/06/2010 08:26

As for cost of postage, airmail from the UK is surprisingly cheap in relation to first class. With my Moscow-based buyer, the original eBay address was a friend of hers based in the UK, so I checked the airmail postage, and the postage was less than £1 more to send all the way to her in Moscow, compared to sending it to the friend (and for him to send on to her, not sure at whose cost). She was delighted to hear that, and asked for the airmail to be added to the invoice, so I could send it directly.
