request to cancel transaction

I have bought a go kart off ebay. I won the auction last night and arranged with the seller to go and pick it up this afternoon. Everything is ok with the go kart but just as we were about to leave the seller asked if we would cancel the transaction because his wife has listed the go kart in "commercial vehicles" and because of this they had to pay a £20 listing fee instead of £1 and therefore he was practically giving it away. He said it wont affect me... it just means he will get this fee refunded. Is this ok to do this and if we do this are we doing anything wrong?

Have you checked that it was listed where they say it was?

bigknickersbigknockers · 05/06/2010 19:14

Have just checked and it is listed in cars, motorcycles and vehicles, what should i do?

It wont affect you at all. The seller is just trying to get a refund on the FVF that he is charged.

whispers that I do it all the time

BuzzingNoise · 05/06/2010 19:17

And it's definitely not in a subcategory for commercial vehicles?

If not, I would send a reply, stating that you have double-checked the category to be cars, motocycles and vehicles and that you would not be happy to cancel the transaction in order to save them fees, as they would be breaking Ebay rules.

If I were you, I would also send an email to Ebay about it.

If you do cancel it, you lose any protection you have from Ebay with regard to refunds and feedback.

It is their mistake and they should have noticed it before.

monkeyfacegrace · 05/06/2010 19:21

Buzz, you are wrong. you arent protected by Ebay anyway, as she will be paying cash, or if she pays by paypal, thats not directly linked to ebay so can still dispute regardless of ebay status. And you can still leave feedback.

Sending an Email to Ebay is just bitchy.

If you arent happy, ignore it. The seller can then cnacel the transaction themselves in 7 days, so you are in the clear completely.

BuzzingNoise · 05/06/2010 19:23

It's not bitchy at all. It's stopping people from not following the rules of Ebay. If you don't like the fee system, don't use the site.

Can you still leave feedback if the transaction is cancelled?

bigknickersbigknockers · 05/06/2010 19:25

I dont really understand ebay. I paid by pay pal 5 minutes after the auction ended (as i always do) So if i ignore it can the seller still cancel it and get a refund?

Monkeyfacegrace may well know, but maybe the seller has told you already: if they cancel the transaction, do you get refunded your paypal payment? Are they asking for cash instead?

monkeyfacegrace · 05/06/2010 19:30

Paypal and Ebay are different companies.

If you ignore the email, the seller can tell Ebay that it's cancelled and get their FVF refunded. Paypal are totally unconnected, so as far as they are concerned, you have still paid for the aforementioned item. Therefore you are still protected and can make a claim if the item is knackered etc.

The seller only gets refunded by Ebay, your payment to him is unaffected.

And yes you can still leave feedback. After all, you have still had dealings with each other so are allowed to comment.

Ebay rules have got stupid recently, and Im beginning to use it less and less to sell, as we get shat on from buyers, and there is no protection for us anymore.

My advice (as someone who sells daily on Ebay), is to relpy saying you are happy to overlook it so he can close the case after 7 days. Then collect and enjoy your go kart! Simples.

BuzzingNoise · 05/06/2010 19:32

Monkeyface, when you ask your buyers if they mind if you cancel the transaction, what reason do you give for it? (I'm just curious)

tethersend · 05/06/2010 19:41

Agree to cancel the transaction, but only after you have picked up the go kart.

There will be no feedback to leave if the transaction is cancelled.

monkeyfacegrace · 05/06/2010 19:47

THERE WILL BE BLOODY FEEDBACK TO LEAVE!
Does no-one listen to me!! Hello, you can leave feedback!

Buzz, it depends who I selling to. Im usually straight up, and tell them that I want to cancel the transaction so I can claw back fees that I lose by people paying via paypal. People are usually so that Im honest, that they say yeah.
Ive done it a few times on items that sell for £200+. Losing £100 a week on fees is a huge dent towards my kids activities, and its very dishonest, but... if I didnt make just enough money to live on Id have to resort to benefits which Im trying desperatley not to.

I even buy tesco value fairy cakes, ice them, then sell them at car boots for 50 each to try and stay afloat!

So though Im verging on dodgy, I am a self confessed Ebay expert, and trying to make ends meet!

Steady on monkeyfacegrace- just because I missed one line of the entire thread doesn't mean you have to shout.

Kerrrist.

You werent the first tether

bigknickersbigknockers · 05/06/2010 20:44

I have picked up the go kart and am happy with it, just still dont have a clue what to do

Just whatever you do, don't mention leaving feedback- I mentioned it once, think I got away with it

sixlostmonkeys · 06/06/2010 09:00

I can't see any problem with agreeing to cancel. You have the kart and you are happy which is the main thing, and so you don't need any kind of so called cover or support from ebay. Tell them to send the request and then you just have to agree to it.

BuzzingNoise · 06/06/2010 11:40

Monkeyface I like the fairy cake idea!! Good on you!

I only sell small things for a few pounds on Ebay so it's a bit different, I guess.
