Can someone explain what's wrong with posting something with a first class stamp?

Just received negative feedback from a buyer regarding a bag. it said "item not very clean. sent in an A2 envelope with a first class stamp. So lots". WTF? For starters the bag was clean, used but very clean. But what was wrong with the A2 envelope(actually it was a jiffy bag) and the first class stamp? What's so annoying is that she just left me negative feedback (my first in 668 items) without asking for a refund or anything.

The bag cost her £1.40 and the postage £1.35. Do you think I'm right to feel a bit miffed by this?

I have emailed her asking her to withdraw the feedback and explained that I will give her a refund if she returns the item.

Is it possible the 1st class stamp was not enough and she had to pay extra?

marriednotdead · 13/05/2010 16:51

Agree with purplefrog, a single 1st class stamp is not enough to post a jiffy bag, regardless of it's weight. They should have told you though, not just given you neg feedback.

Hadn't thought of that. No, the lady in the post office told me that the package was thin enough to go through as a "large letter" rather than a parcel, so the big first class stamp cost about 70p I think. I always take parcels to be weighed at the Post Office and must admit was quite surprised that a "large letter" could be that big. I will wait to hear from the ebayer. She only has only been a member for 2 weeks so maybe hasn't grasped how important feedback is. Thanks for your help.

its REALLY irritating when you get that little form telling you that YOU have to go and pay for an underpaid item. Bugs the heck out of me when there's a 1st class stamp on something that should have been done by weight

re 1st class stamps, you will get charged if the item has to be squeezed/pushed through that indicator thingie rather than easily slipping through it, even if it does actually go through. Not actually your fault if the woman at the post office got it wrong though - explain that you DID get it checked at the post office and hopefully then they'll take back the feedback

When you say an A2 jiffy bag is this A2 as in paper sizes? If so, it is definitely too big for "large letter". The maximum dimensions for large letter are:

Length: 353mm max
Width: 250mm max
Thickness: 25mm max

which is just slightly bigger than A4.

I agree, a first class stamp is not enough for a package of that size, and she probably had to pay more to the post man.

Sorry, I meant A3 (half A4 size). The P O have a slot to test these things, and it fitted through there. I have explained in 2 emails to the buyer, but she hasn't responded. So have just accepted it - have replied to her negative feedback explaining her lack of knowledge of ebay protocol and unwillingness to communicate so that will have to do unfortunately. It's just so annoying as I genuinely try very hard to describe things accurately and to keep postage costs low. C'est la vie.

A5 is half the size of A4.

A3 is double the size of A4.

So I suspect you mean A5. Anyway, you got it checked at the PO so it can hardly be your fault if the wrong stamp was put on it.

You are right to be annoyed at the negative feedback.

BertieBotts · 15/05/2010 19:24

I always look at comments on negative feedback, I wouldn't worry.

PfftThePinkoLeftyDragon · 15/05/2010 19:24

Her comment about the envelope probably means that she thought it should have been packaged better. some bubble wrap, something waterproof round the bag in case?

Surprise · 16/05/2010 15:59

Pfft - it was a jiffy bag, so should have been perfectly ok. Thanks everyone for all your comments.
