Ebay- A good alternative for DD to make some pocket money?

Ive never sold anything on Ebay and wouldnt know where to start. But I have a big bag of clothes which have been waiting to go to the charity shop for a while. The reason I havent sent them is because I know when the clothes are a decent lable, they dont always get as far as the shop floor, or get bought by people who sell them on on Ebay.

So I was thinking that I could give DD (14) the job of selling them on Ebay and let her keep the profits. She could also declutter the house and sell things which are knocking around.

I thorght if she did that well, she could use some of the profits and maybe a bit of her savings to buy other things which she could sell and make a bit of profit.

What do you think? Do you think this is a good idea. I think it will help DD learn an important lesson in, earning money = putting the time and effort in and will also give her control of her own money.

I dont have any idea of how to sell things so any advice would be much apreciated. Thankyou

Does anybody have some advice?

Is it better to start bids low?
How do I know how much for packing?
How much time will be taken up?
Is there a best way to show your goods?

Sorry have no idea about selling on Ebay but do buy a fair amount off Ebay. Will watch this thread with much interest as would like to start selling too. Otherwise think it's a good idea for your DD.

Definately a good idea.

I do this with DS's old things and he gets the moeny.

Start bids low, and there is an ebay calculator that will tell you roughly how much for p&p. Only charge p&p what it costs you, rather than trying to make a bit more money through that, you will get more people bidding.

It doesn't take much time at all tbh.

Best day to start a 7 day auction is sunday, for some reason., I guess more people are free to watch an item on sunday and bid at the last minute.

I am reasonably new to selling and have found it easy to do. I started of buying bags from PO, but they were 70p each, now buy from Ebay shop for about 3p each.
Most people advise to list on Sundays, however as an occasional buyer I often find the volume of traffic makes my Internet connection to slow and my bids are to late. As a result I list on Fridays or Sat.
Good packing and honest description are vital.
Good luck

Thankyou for that advice, overmydeadbody and giggly

Well today is Sunday so I will get DD up out of bed and sorting out some things, taking photos and getting them listed.

oooh and you can save old packaging and reuse it, there is no need to send stuff in brand new jiffy bags, bubble wrap etc etc

this will bring your p&p costs down making your items more attractive to bidders.

She has listed about 6 items. It took her all afternoon, as she had one eye on the TV watching Glee series 1.

I dont think she has done very well with the discriptions. can I log in and tweek them, or do I have to leave them once they have been posted?

giggly what type of bags did you buy from ebay, are they packing bags? Are they direct from Ebay or from a seller.

Teamcullen, you can edit the listings (presumably she is using your user ID or you are able to use hers) It's quite self explanatory and easy to do. Just go into the listing, click on edit and then change what you want to change.

Packaging and mailbags have their own category on ebay - just have a browse through the different categories and you'll see it!! They are all much of a muchness; as a general rule the more packaging you buy, the cheaper it is per bag. Ebay itself don't sell them, just various companies.

My friend lets her teenager do exactly what you are doing and it works really well. Good luck with the listings!!

Tryharder Yes she is using my account for now so I will go in and edit her listings and have a look at the packaging.

Thankyou
