Buyer left Neutral feedback - WWYD?

I recently sold a popular item of designer clothing on Ebay. I had shedloads of watchers but for whatever reason (probably due to unsociable time of auction end), the item eventually went for a "steal" (i.e I would have normally expected to get £10 - £15 for it, buyer got it for about £2). OK, fine, have no problems with that, that's the way of ebay sometimes.

I posted it the same day that the buyer paid by first class post in new (i.e not recycled) packaging. The item was washed and ironed before posting and I checked over for any defects. My postage prices are shaved to the bone e.g if it costs me £2.25 to post, I will charge £2.50.

Sorry to waffle, just trying to set the scene of what a bargain I think this person had.

Anyway, the buyer received the item the next day and immediately left NEUTRAL feedback along the lines of "thanks for quick delivery". I sent a very polite and friendly email asking if there had been a problem with the item, could they let me know etc etc (no txtspk, insults or SHOUTING). That was a while ago and they have not bothered to respond.

So what should I do? I know neutral feedback doesn't affect your overall % score but anyone reading my feedback might be put off by the neutral especially as there is no explanation or apparent reason. I have checked my dashboard and there are no low scores (1s or 2s) so the buyer clearly was not that unhappy. I'm not saying I'm perfect; perhaps I genuinely did overlook a fault but it would have been nice to have been told about it and at least given a chance to rectify the situation.

Any advice?

Maybe person either clicked the wrong box or is fairly new?

scurryfunge · 29/04/2010 12:44

It's probably unjustified but maybe the buyer thoght it was an ordinary transaction and the seller didn't do anything outstanding to receive more than the neutral feedback. Feedback would be pointless anyway if you only accepted the positive stuff

Tryharder · 29/04/2010 12:46

I thought of that Iklboo but if they are not bothering to respond to emails then what can I do? If I had accidentally left negative or neutral feedback for someone, I'd be apologising profusely and emailing ebay to get it changed.

But Scurry, surely if you buy something for a good price, it arrives the next day and the item is how it was described, then, we, as sellers, can do no more.

I once got a neutral feedback a few years ago as a new seller when a pair of jeans I sold had a broken zip. The buyer changed the zip herself; she didn't want to return them as they fitted her well and she liked them otherwise. That was fine - I took it on the chin, it was my fault and I learned a big lesson always to check things like zips and fastenings.

I agree Tryharder, it was probably unjustified....I would give excellent feedback for just such a transaction....but who knows what is in the mind of the buyer

PurpleFrog · 29/04/2010 13:45

If a buyer has no experience of selling themselves, I don't think they realise how big a deal feedback ratings are. To most sellers a neutral feedback doesn't really mean neutral..... it means something worse.

Beasknees · 29/04/2010 13:51

see, i'm a buyer not a seller and it wouldn't occur to me that giving neutral feedback would be a bad thing.

Spidermama · 29/04/2010 13:57

I'm more of a buyer than a seller and I would NEVER leave neutral or negative unless there was a clear problem and I had communicated with the seller first to see if it could be rectified.

On the one occasion when I did leave neutral it was quite difficult to do in that the screen says something like 'WARNING! YOU ARE ABOUT TO LEAVE NEUTRAL FEEDBACK. IS THERE SOME WAY OF SORTING THE PROBLEM BEFORE YOU DO THIS?' or something of that nature.

It sounds like you have been very unlucky with possibly a new ebayer who doesn't really get how it runs.

I have to admit that as a buyer I often scan for neutral FB before deciding whether or not to trust the seller.

sixlostmonkeys · 29/04/2010 14:53

check and see what feedback she usually gives. if she always leaves neuts then maybe follow up the fb with. Unfortunately this buyer always leaves neutrals
