Husband just collected item - 260580280202

cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260580280202&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

There are a very many faults that are not described in the listing - bits chipped, coming away, drawers cracked, back panel coming off, drawers push right in etc etc.

Basically it is not as we expected - although I must point out that he didn't misdescribe it. I think the listing is still misleading though.

We paid a lot for this expecting it to be solid and it is flimsy.

Do I have any grounds to go to the seller for a return or refund or some sort? His listing states he will not accept returns...

Any advice appreciated.

Sorry to be direct, but you collected it. Why wouldnt you check it over before handing over cash (Im assuming you paid cash?).
I know ebay is to buy not to view, but with £200 I know if I wasnt completley happy Id walk away.
Im afraid you can try and contact him, but he has few feedback and I wouldnt hold out much hope. On the other and, a neg feedback would destroy him at this stage, so he might want to avoid that at all costs?...

Why did you not say something about the condition when you went to pick it up? Tbh with collection in person items that's the point at which you need to check it all over -- it's a bit tricky to take issue with it once you've taken it home.

The seller is clearly an inexperienced ebayer -- the description is sketchy and the listing really needed a lot more photos. Otoh he hasn't really said much about the condition, so it's hard to see how it could have been misdescribed.

£200 is a lot to pay for a pine chest of drawers, tbh -- you can get nice mahogany ones for that kind of money.

I don't know where you stand legally, but presumably the fact that you've picked it up and taken it home implies some kind of acceptance of the item.

Sorry, not much help, really. The drawers pushing right in is relatively easy to fix tho, you just need drawer stops which are little bits of wood that sit on the body of the chest.

Husband picked it up. Men tsk!

Plus we had paid paypal for it.

Am annoyed with myself as we bid that much and paid for it!

I just feel that if I sold it on I would be duty bound to list all faults, so would never get the money back for it.

Must be an inexperienced seller if they let you pay with paypal for a collection item.

PippiL · 13/04/2010 21:02

Yes he is definitely inexperienced - I had to get his contact details from ebay as he hadn't responded to my emails asking when we could collect.

Feel sick to my stomach that we went on the photo alone and paid so much given the lack of description.

What I am not sure about though is if he has misdescribed through lack of comment on the damage to it? Does that count?

I would at least try and ask for a refund. Not saying what is wrong is just as bad as lying isn;t it?

No134 · 13/04/2010 21:04

Well, technically you could claim through paypal on the basis of 'Item significantly not as described' and since you did pickup in person he seller won't have paypal-approved proof of posting, so paypal will refund you. Or at least that's my understanding of how it works, I only accept cash on collection for pickup in person for exactly that reason.

But I think that's a pretty harsh thing to do to an inexperienced ebay seller, even if he has been economical with the truth.

Dunno, it's a moral conundrum, innit. Tbh I think you took a risk with a bid that was over the odds for the item anyway, plus having a new seller and poor item description. Lots of Victorian pine chests are very cheaply made anyway, and you can see from the photo that the basic structure is pretty flimsy. Morally you should probably take it on the chin, but it's a lot of money to lose so I can see why you're annoyed.

PippiL · 13/04/2010 21:05

Plus its not dipped pine I don't think. It has never been painted and then dipped.

The insides of the drawers have never seen a bit of paint.

(talking about seller not detailing problems)

PippiL · 13/04/2010 21:24

Right have sent this:

Hi,
I am really sorry to have to come back to you about the chest of drawers, but it is significantly not as described.
There is a lot of damage to it that wasn't detailed in the listing - bits coming off the top edge, drawer bottom is cracked in one or more drawers, the back panel is coming away, the bottom right hand trim is missing.
The damage makes the item less usable than we had expected from your description of "good storage".
I hope you will feel able to resolve this issue, my preference would be for us to return the item to you for a full refund.
Can you please contact us to let us know what you can do.
Kind regards,

Yes i think thats fine

No134 · 13/04/2010 21:35

yy, that's entirely fair.

Let us know what response you get! Hope he'll be reasonable, the listing really isn't adequate. For his own protection he really should have listed each and every defect, plus ideally photos from lots of angles.

No134 · 13/04/2010 21:36

Looking at the listing again, he's even put that it's got four drawers when any fule can see that it's got five.

He's a numpty.
