Second Chance Offer - what does this mean?

Hi. Can someone explain to me why a seller is allowed to make a Second Chance Offer if they have an identical item for sale? I have just been sent a Second Chance Offer and I can see that the seller has now listed an identical item. This particular seller specialises in a particular area and has sold several items identical to this - does this mean he's giving everyone a second chance?! Obviously the winner could have backed out but I'm just curious about this "identical" item rule. Hope this makes sense! TIA

Bump. It doesn't make sense, does it?! I've just re-read the eBay blurb and actually they call it a "duplicate" item not "identical" - just in case it inspires anyone to respond! I should add that I'd really like to buy the item as a present for someone but it's a lot more than I'd normally spend. My eBay rule is never pay more than you feel comfortable about losing and I am a bit uncomfortable about this tbh although not sure why.

Should be fine, i don't see the problem really, he has more than one of the item, you did not win the original item but he's offering you the chance to buy a duplicate (the same item) for the price you bid up to.

Ohhh! I get it! So in fact there are three items - the one I "lost", a duplicate that I'm being offered and another duplicate which is currently listed (and not BIN). I thought I was being offered the one I "lost" just because he happened to have a duplicate listed.

I knew I was being dim and I know that what I've just written still makes no sense to anyone but me!

Thanks, Marne!
