Asking for extra money if you pay by Paypal - is this normal?

I've won an item on ebay, and the seller has asked for 50p extra as I've paid by paypal. I've never heard of this before.

I know it's only 50p but this is taking the piss surely?

Or is this normal? Does it cost more to use paypal?

Paypal do charge a bit to deal with the fees but I've never heard of that. Was it stated in the listing? How else does he expect you to pay?

this is not allowed at all!
tell the seller it is totally against the rules. If he doesn't back down then simply click the report button

Never seen anyone do it before, and have bought and sold loads on ebay. He is taking the piss. Yes he will be charged a bit to recieve your psyment, but in return he gets instant payment by a secure method, that is what the fee is for! Most decent sellers know this and do not pass the cost on to buyers.

Very stupid, I think you should call him on it.

eBay do not allow sellers yo charge extra for paypal
most try and levy a bit more on p&p to help cover costs but to ask outright is against eBay rules

Thanks everyone, you're right of course. It was stated in the listing, but as it's only a cheap thing, and I liked the pictures I bid for it without reading it properly.

I've asked the buyer to waive the fee or refund me. I know it's only 50p but as I only paid 99p for it, 50p is 50% extra!

It makes no difference if they put it in the listing he cannot do it. People used to do this all the time long ago, or charge a percentage for PP payments, but long before they were the same company I think! Cheeky anyway, they are using a service......you wouldn't ask for more money at a car boot because you paid £10 for your table!!

Oh and he's paid 23p to PP by the way! Not that that is your problem, his choice to sell on ebay and knows fees already! Lots of poeple put things in the listings that mean diddly squat

I wrote a nice email and gave the seller a chance to back down - I said either waive the 50p and I'll give you good feedback - or cancel the sale and I'll leave no feedback. It's against the rules but I guess you just didn't know.

They said basically, "no, this isn't fair - why should I have to pay all these fees to paypal, I won't make any money, I'm going to report you to ebay".

I've said go ahead, and reported them. Which I really didn't want to do, but she's left me no choice as she's reported me!

eBay no longer allows sellers to charge extra for PayPal payments.
