How do you convert watchers to bidders?

I know, impossible. But I keep listing items which have loads of watchers and no bids. What am I doing wrong?
Currently, I have some kitchen unit doors and drawer fronts for sale - 12 doors, mint condition, they're solid wood, and my starting price is £25. Loads of watchers but no bids. Admittedly it's collection only, and rather specialized; but still...
Same happens with most stuff I try to sell - watchers but no bids.

Luck of the draw I think. Nothing you can do to make bids happen apart from make sure you are listing at a reasonable price.
If there are lots of watchers and the starting price is highish then they may be put off bidding if they think it's going to increase too much, but again it's a price thing and pot luck in most cases.
I've often had loads of watchers but then only had one or two bidders on items.

When are your auctions finishing - some times (e.g. Sunday p.m.) are notably better than say, 4 p.m weekday.

If you're willing to risk selling at a lower price, then start the bidding lower. There was some research that showed things were more likley to sell (not necessarily at a lower price ultimately, either) if the item was fisrt identified as a'bargain starting at 99p etc' Apparently it gets people caught up in the excitement of the auction or soemthing....

good point abitworried - I always start my auctions on a Sunday and have them going for the full week, ending on Sunday night when people are often online because it's work the next day so they haven't gone out partying!
Avoid Friday and Sat evenings too as often people are out on those nights.

EssieAmma · 04/03/2010 10:31

Ah, now one of mine is ending in the next 20 mins (kitchen unit doors). The two which ended at 8ish last night both went.
With 13 watchers and questions on the doors, I wonder whether I should relist - I started at £25 which I thought was reasonable. But they're a bizarre object anwyay, I'd have thought; you need to live locally and need kitchen unit doors I suppose. And you're stuffed if you need one which I don't have!

can we have a link? [nosy]

EssieAmma · 04/03/2010 11:48

Hahaha! Pure it was here.

I'm now wondering what to do with them if I don't relist - tragic shame to bin them!

OK.

well looking at the link the cupboards look completely different colours so that may put bidders off. Also you might want a few more photos so that people get a better idea of what they are buying.
If i was buying kitchen stuff I would wantto feel confident that it would look good in the location IYSWIM. I think pictures help do that.

I would also drop starting price - people get encourgaed when they see others bidding - funnily enough if no one bids and you are pondering if it is a bargain or a pig in a poke you are less likely to. If one person bids then others think 'oh yes, they are fine. I am not being taken for a ride with some mismatched shit'

Thats what I would do

muppetgirl · 04/03/2010 12:01

re you sure thy're solid wood? they look like new MDF type to me? This could be putting buyers off.

Is it a new kitchen that you are replacing? (we bought a new house and hated the builders kitchen so replaced it) It looks like a kitchen from a new built house.

I like the close up picture as you can see the colour/style door handle but could you take a picture of the kitchen itself so your potential buyer can get a feel of what it could look like -if it's still in situ of course!

How old is the kitchen? Yous say used but not how old it is. ^ months use is different from 10 years.

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 04/03/2010 12:05

yes, more photo's, more detail.. I agree about a close up of the handles and hinges.

Have you got it in place at the moment? Take a photo of that and put on.

Would you consider splitting the listing into two separate ones - one with just the units, and one with the doors?

EssieAmma · 04/03/2010 12:48

Great, thanks everyone! That's really helpful!

I will take more photos - the kitchen is still in situ now, but won't be from Monday hopefully! I'll admit that I didn't really give it much attention as I thought I'd list, see how it went - expected no interest at all. But with 13 watchers that suggests there's a good chance here (I'm not one to miss an opportunity!)
I will add them later on, so that they finish at a better time than mid morning.
I will also detail the whole London thing - I live in Wales but my DH is in London and I'm going down there shortly; can put the doors in the car at no extra cost. (Although DH will be grumpy but there you go...)

Other questions:
Pure I'm not selling the units, just the doors and drawer fronts.
Not sure how old the kitchen is but it was in the house when I moved in 4 1/2 years ago. It was in effect a new build (barn conversion actually) so nobody else has used them and nobody lived there before I did.
Could also close up handles and the actual doors - they seem to be solid wood as there's a wood-joint (IYKWIM, tongue-and-groove) visible. I doubt it's handmade, but I do think they're better quality than what I'm replacing them with.

Hell, I should have come on here before listing in the first place! Thanks everyone!
