not just primark but also tesco, new look, george etc...

a mum at school buys them off ebay (bad pics, poorly listed etc), unpicks the labels and then re-sells as vintage style, have know her to sell primark stuff for up to £70....

i also buy and re-list, but always leave the labels in and list the dress under the correct brand, just find it sooo annoying that she makes a fortune (and brags about it!)...

i know this is wrong, but do i do anything about it?! (or keep my nose out!)

have name changed by the way, don't think she uses mn but you never know!

thanks

Buyer beware I say!

Fleecy · 31/01/2010 21:29

I think it's fundamentally dishonest and I wouldn't do it - but agree with hf128219 that anyone buying on eBay has to take their chances.

And I say this as an eBay addict...

NappyShedSal · 02/02/2010 09:22

Show us a link - I'd be interested to know if I'd be sucked in by this person!!

MitchyInge · 02/02/2010 09:25

if people are prepared to pay that, and are happy with their purchases what's the harm?

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/02/2010 09:29

Lol. If people are daft enough to spend a premium on 'vintage' stuff from eBay, well, can't say I have much sympathy.

Your friend has obviously got an entrepeneurial mind.

morningpaper · 02/02/2010 09:31

lol

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/02/2010 09:40

I really like the sound of your friend, the sly old so and so.

So OP does reselling - so buys primark crap and resells it as primark crap with a premium of 50p or whaveter.

OP's mate buys primark crap, rips label out, markets it as genuine Biba from 1970, makes a £50 profit.

OP why don;t you do the same!

Yesm vintage is what used to be called second hand clothes which you got from Scope.

Now it is called vintage you have specialist shops which charge a fortune.

It's a swizz.

I blame Kate Moss.

lucykate · 02/02/2010 09:47

i wouldn't worry about it, it's up to the buyer to do their research properly before placing a bid. one day she'll get found out and her ebay account closed, it's only a matter of time before someone buys something and recognises it for what it really is.

iheartdusty · 02/02/2010 09:49

if she is just saying 'vintage' or 'vintage style' then I do think it's up to a buyer to take a chance.

But if she is being actively dishonest -eg labelling something 'Biba 1970s' (as opposed to 'Biba 1970s style'!) - or lying about the fabric content - then I would report her to ebay.

lucykate · 02/02/2010 09:49

are you brave enough to link?, someone could ask a question about something she has for sale.

ilovesprouts · 02/02/2010 09:51

ooh yes id like to see a link

eggontoast · 02/02/2010 10:03

Is it fraud and illegal? Can you report to Ebay?

Firawla · 02/02/2010 20:20

yeah can we see link
im surprised how people could be fooled by something like this tbh.. strange
if it comes up in conversation why dont you just ask her "don't you feel dishonest though? it doesn't seem right " if she says no then just leave it, at least you let her know your feelings if your that bothered. the customers must be quite silly though!

Tryharder · 03/02/2010 12:19

Yes, if she sewing in fake Biba labels or whatever then I would report her. But if she is merely advertising stuff as "vintage style" then don't see what you could do. Vintage style doesn't actually mean vintage - just means it's in the style of vintage (whatever that means, anyway).

I'm with you OP. You might not make as much money as her but at least you have a clear conscience. I truly believe in karma and if she's conning people, it will one day bite her on the bum.

tittletattletottle · 04/02/2010 20:56

aarrgghh no way am brave enough to post a link, wish i was!!

don't really know what the harm is, just seems sooo wrong!?!

suppose am annoyed really, i enjoyed selling before she came along with her label removing and huge profits! just as an example either of us might pay £5-£8 inc p&p for a dress, i would relist with much better pis and better description, maybe as vintage style but always with the brand clear, and make £15-£25ish (so not quite 50p!), she would relist but remove labels and sell as vintage and make £50-£70 grrrr. (she's not sewing fake biba labels in btw!)

i know it's only a matter of time before someone susses her, but i don't know if there is actually anything 'illegal' about it, just morally wrong.....

and i have told her i thought it was a bit wrong, and she absolutely couldn't give a monkeys!!

paisleyleaf · 04/02/2010 21:03

I thought vintage was a look, much the same as boho or emo, rather than a fact.
I think it does work to your advantage to put such words in your title as it's often in buyers search.

tinierclanger · 04/02/2010 21:06

It is actually illegal if she specifically describes the clothes as something they are not. I guess it depends on what she says though. Vintage is a vague description.

Go on, post a link!

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/02/2010 21:10

Oh I still think this is funny and truly don't understand why this is such a moral sin.

Look, if people are daft enough to pay £25 for second hand Primark tat, why is it so wrong to alter the garmenst and get more idiots to pay £75 for the same (albeit altered) Primark tat?

Good on her. She should go on Dragons Den.

Pannacotta · 04/02/2010 21:13

I don't understand how she is making so much money on vintage items, what does she say in the descriptions?

Think we really need a link!

catinthehat2 · 04/02/2010 21:14

If you post a link I might believe your story.

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 04/02/2010 21:18

It's the same as those who pick an old battered piece of furniture, give it a lick of paint and put it on ebay under "shabby chic" asking for £600.

The people who buy them are VERY stupid .
