Can a seller charge for P&P in a free postage category

This is the item number 310196036386. It is in a free postage category and the seller has put free P&P at the top. But then lower down has said that postage is charged at £2.50 and to wait for an invoice before paying. Can the seller do this?

I read that if you want second class post its free, first class is the above price. But I would email seller to be clear

That looks like there isn't a choice of postage, just 1st class at £2.50. I don't think they can do that, check with eBay.

a seller is not allowed to do this but unfortunately since the free p&p thing came in a heck of a lot are doing it and ebay are doing nothing about it.
The best thing to do is report the listing and buy elsewhere.
Some people go ahead and buy and then pay just the correct amount (the amount with no p&p) but this just brings you hassle you don't need and probably won't get you your book.

This has created a massive problems for genuine sellers (like me ) as all the cheaters get placed higher in the search results because of their hidden charges. A lot of booksellers have had to give up completely. I'm struggling big time as this is my only income (and my ds will insist on wanting food and clothes and heat in the house.......)
so.... the only thing you can do really is ignor the cheaters and buy from me!

I've given up selling my books on ebay too.

I read a lot and am in a book club so a lot of my books are contempary fiction and quite popular. Unless its a free listing day its just not worth the hassle, as I dont want to be out of pocket with listing fees etc.

I still buy books off ebay though

What kind of books are you selling SLM ?

sixlostmonkeys · 25/01/2010 10:45

I sell all sorts to be honest. I do tend to sell a lot of 'vintage' children's books. Well, when i say 'vintage' a lot are from when I was a child I've found that original copies of books that people read as a child are popular, even though you may be able to get a brand new reprint.
I'm currently bundling up 1000s of kids books (you should see my room!!!) with the intention of selling them as job lots of probably 30 or so. My aim really is to hopefully sell them for enough to cover my costs etc - just so long as they get a good home. (I'll be working out the weights etc for postage so that the buyer doesn't end up paying more for postage than for the books iyswim.)
I'm aiming to go for more antiquarian books, but saying that, so many books land in my room that I always end up selling a complete mix. Eg - last night I sold 3 books (WOW!) one 1970s kids book for £23, one kid's reprint for £2.50 and one business book for £12. Before the 'free' p&p came in I used to sell 50% of my listings - now it's less than 10%

Eeek ! Thats pretty grim.

Hope they come to their senses soon and reinstate it.
