Non-paying buyer

I'm fairly new to selling on Ebay, and I think the winner of a coat I sold last Saturday is not going to pay. They promised to pay up yesterday when contacted are three days with no payment. However, they sent me a message yesterday saying that Paypal "wasn't working" and they couldn't get the payment to go through(!) I sent a message today asking them to pay as soon as possible, but there has been no reply.

Should I send another message now (6 days after the auction ended) saying I am reporting them as a non-paying bidder? Or will this just result in negative feed back and I should just forget about this person?

Can I simultaneously contact the highest bidding loser with a second chance offer?

Advice please! - I've never been in this situation before and am confused as to the best route.

you can open a non paying dispute after 7 days - once the dispute is sorted one way or another you can do a second chance offer if need be, or relist

titfertat · 21/11/2009 09:44

definitely don't offer it to another bidder until the dispute is resoolved, or you could end up in a tricky situation if both pay up!

Sometimes paypal does go wrong. I changed my linked e-mail address on it once and it messed the whole thing up. Took a few days to realise that's what caused it.

I had a non-paying + non-responding buyer a few weeks ago, opened a dispute after 2 weeks with no payment and the cheeky fecker then immediatley e-mailed and asked if it was ok to pay by cheque. I said no and I would wait for paypal, she took a few days but paid up. And she gave me good feedback, didn't give her any though.

Thanks very much for the tips. I'll send her some more friendly reminders, then, and if she hasn't paid by the middle of next week, I'll start a non-paying bidder dispute.

If someone, like yourself, pesters me for payment as you are doing to your buyer, I refuse to pay.

NickNemo · 25/11/2009 19:53

Well, ist been 6 days since OP sold the item, so its pretty reasonable to ask for payment in this time. Most people say 3 days after auction ends.

Knickers0nMaHead · 25/11/2009 21:55

3 Days means naff all though. A buyer has 7 days to pay.

ChilloHippi · 25/11/2009 23:21

Knickers is right. A buyer has seven days.
I usually wait 3 or 4 days and then send a second invoice as a reminder and if I am still waiting for payment after seven days I email them in case there is a problem.
When I buy, I do sometims leave it a few days if I am waiting for funds. If I think it'll be longer than 5 days I email to let them know.

Carrotfly · 26/11/2009 11:20

I do think its quite rude though if you dont let the seller know you are intending to pay albeit a few days after the auction ends.

I usually pay very quickly, but I hate being sent an invoice 0.05 seconds after the auction ends, kinds looks a bit desperate imo.

7 days is the ebay 'rule' for a buyer to complete a transaction, alll this pay within 3 days stuff you see listed on some auctions means nothing.

NickNemo · 26/11/2009 14:53

There's nothing worse than waiting for a buyer to pay, 1 day or 7 days. The uncertainty itself can cause real stress to a seller. That said, yes, selling on ebay can be stressful in itself, so needs a strong constitution.

But I just find it rude if buyers go incommunicado after buying, not even letting the sellers know they're around. There's no real excuse for not paying after 6 days, unless you're ill or on holiday etc, unless you're just hassling the seller.

I give the buyer three days to pay, then send an invoice, a reminder after 6 days, and open a dispute if they haven't paid by the 8th day. That's only fair.

If you can't afford it, don't buy it, because somewhere out there there is a seller who probably needs the money!

Knickers0nMaHead · 27/11/2009 13:32

Yes but ebay rules say the buyer has 7 days, regardless of what the seller says. I always pay straight away but never expect my buyers to. Just because someone leaves it 6 days, does not mean they arent going to pay for their items and it doesn't mean they cant afford it.

Knickers0nMaHead · 27/11/2009 13:39

Asa you can tell, I get quite pissed off by this

Two week ago I bought something, Within about 30 seconds of me winning I got an invoice and a message saying

'PAY NOW'....

The second day I got a message saying

'ARE YOU GUNNA PAY OR WOT? '

Day 3, which was the day I was going to pay, I got another invoice with

'PAY THEN IT AS BIN 3 DAYS N U HAVE 2 PAY AFTA 3 DAYS OR I WIL CUM 4 THE MONEY'

So, I thought, fuck it, I aint paying. Reported him to ebay to being a KnobJocky, and I never paid.

Scorps · 27/11/2009 13:40

I didn't know that knickers. Means i shal lwait a bit longer for my several hundred pounds.

Even though he has said twice he will pay 'tonight'.

Scorps · 27/11/2009 13:41
