Buyer on ebay delaying payment...is this ok..?

shhhh · 24/06/2009 18:01

I have sold an item on ebay on the 20th. An invoice was sent to the seller..no response.

On the 22nd I sent an email saying payment was outstanding and needed asap. No response.

Today (24th) I have sent another email saying I have not had a response to other emails and payment is required by end of today. Failure to do so will leave me no choice but to cancel auction and reclaim off ebay and leave negative feedback.

Obviously this got a response.

Replied to me saying email was "curt", actually buyer has 7 days to make payment and she intends to take this 7 days and if this isn't suitable for me to cancel the auction.Said also I can't leave negative BUT she can.

Can't beleive the cheek of some people. I replied saying its manners to let someone know of a delay (im not unreasonable and in the case of a buyer last week I was fine with her paying for an item 4 days after it was won..). AND also pointed out that although she is fine with a 7 day delay the seller may not be (iykwim...I may be on hols so unable to post till days/week later) although had payment been made once auction won postage would have been straight away..

She says she is well within ebays rules..

Im just annoyed that ebay are for the buyers and not 50/50 and just want a rant really...annoyed as she has me by the short and curlies.

I think it's reasonable for someone to take 7 days to pay. If you want payment immediately, you should list the item as 'buy it now'.

frisbyrat · 25/06/2009 10:38

If I had been the buyer, I think I would have interpreted your email on the second day as rather pushy, and your third email as super aggressive. At that point I would have paid hastily and then given you bad feedback.
Let's hope your buyer doesn't do the same, eh?

I also think Smac's suggestion is the more polite and civilised way of dealing with not receiving a payment within 24 hours, which you seem to see as the norm. I guess you don't put up with cheques, either?

SoupDragon · 25/06/2009 10:43

If I were the buyer, I would have been p*ssed off by your emails and would pay as late as I could. I would also make mention of the bullying & inaccurate emails when leaving feedback.

shhhh · 25/06/2009 17:46

Soupdragon, sorry but you are OTT...bullying..?! .

Its ebay fgs.. Hardly life or death..? I started this as I just wanted advice, I received it and appreciate it.
Don't appreicate being called a bully. Way OTT.

Frisby,if negative was left it wouldn't bother me. Yeah so my rating is 100% atm BUT if someone felt they wanted to leave me negative on the payment side of things then so be it. I won't loose any sleep. Life is to short.

Oh and btw, cheques..why wouldn't I accept cheques..? Not a problem at this end..at least I have a payment thats being processed.

shhhh ... you requested payment, twice, in 4 days AND told the buyer you would leave them negative FB (which is hysterical considering you CAN'T). Your buyers have 7 days in which to pay and should not be harassed to do so.
And actually getting these messages over and over in your inbox - in your home - can be very upsetting for someone.

As a buyer I would be so annoyed with you.
As a seller, I am annoyed with you!
You cannot act that way on Ebay any longer.
You need to learn HOW to sell or you will find yourself with more than one neg and a suspended selling account.

shhhh · 25/06/2009 18:11

Calm down obo !

Thanks for the replies everyone. Ok so I asked for payment quicker than the 7 days..my auction did ask for it within 2-3 days and postage within 2-3 days. I now know buyers have 7 days to pay.

Don't all take it personally. Im not a bad person, im not a bully and my emails were never offensive or threatening (only about leaving negative comments...that BTW was only if she pulled out of transaction..NOT for late paying. Please read my op)

Please don't make me out to be something I am not and was not.

If I was the buyer I would be quite fed up with you - you're not a bad person, but you are quite impatient and stroppy! Maybe you could send them a nice communication along the lines of,
"Yes, you are quite right, the seven days aren't up yet. Please forget I messaged you!'
Or would this be too much humble pie ?

ino · 25/06/2009 20:22

shhh - I think people have given their opinions about how they would feel based upon your approach because online and on ebay your only contact is via emails. Nobody has said that you actually are a bully etc...

FAQinglovely · 25/06/2009 20:27

"I have sent another email saying I have not had a response to other emails and payment is required by end of today. Failure to do so will leave me no choice but to cancel auction and reclaim off ebay and leave negative feedback."

According to your OP it was if she failed to pay by the end of the day - didn't even give her a chance to pull out.

shhhh · 25/06/2009 20:46

BUT FAQ, I have had episodes on ebay where I have sold an item and sent invoice..nothing else....sent an email days later just checking if all ok..No response. THEN got a reply days later saying they didn't want the item. That was my reasoning behind saying if I heard nothing then I would pull out of the sale.

Im open to peoples suggestion and have in fact replied to the buyers email saying she is fine to pay within 7 days BUT that although I appear eager I just wanted to give her a good service and have the item turned around in days. That I have never experienced a delay of a week of payment.

As I have said before, I don't see what big heardship it is to drop a line to say "it will be paid in x days" IMO she was I ignorant. I may have appeared rude or stroppy but there is no need for ignorance.

As I also said before, I appreciate the advice and comments. BUT thats not to say I have to agree with what everyone says...

I don't want this thread to turn bad.

I have never had a problem with ebay buyers or sellers amd imo its manners to let someone know when they can expect payment.

I guess its best to end this thread here....

So, you didn't know buyers have 7 days to pay or that you can't leave negative feedback but you call her ignorant??

just 2 days after the end of the auction, you chased payment. 4 days after the end of the auction you threatened her with negative feedback and cancelling the transaction. How is that not bullying behaviour? After all that, you had the cheek to call her up on bad manners!!

I'll be very surprised if you don't get negative feedback from her after this. Deservedly so.

SoupDragon · 25/06/2009 21:29

"only about leaving negative comments...that BTW was only if she pulled out of transaction..NOT for late paying. Please read my op"

Well, I did read the OP and it clearly states that you threatened to cancel the auction and leave negative feedback if she did not pay by the end of the day.

Just to stick my oar in...this is what Ebay says on their FAQ Payment Guide:

"All sellers appreciate quick payment and most post after receiving payment, so it's good to pay as soon as you win an auction or buy a Fixed Price item. If you make an online payment, you can just click the Pay Now button in the email notification or on the item page. The seller will be paid and know to post your item immediately. Otherwise, we recommend paying within three days of the sale. Some sellers include information on when they expect to be paid in their listings."

7 days is absolute maximum after which, the seller can open an unpaid dispute.

I'm a buyer and a seller. I find it courteous to pay immediately. If I couldn't then I would ask BEFORE WINNING AN AUCTION if it would be ok to pay in XX amount of days especially if the auction description had stipulated payment within a certain amount of days.

ino · 25/06/2009 22:34

Well I have been on the receiving end of an email pressing me for payment after 2 days....I hadn't paid yet because I had been away and unable to get online but knew when I bid that I would be able to pay within 7 days. In that event the seller did threaten to re-list the item which I found a bit unnecessary and I must admit that I did make a mental note not to buy from her again!

Pingpong · 25/06/2009 23:20

and here is what ebay say about communicating with buyers trading partners.....

"Threats and insults almost always backfire. Every eBay member's reputation is dependent on feedback left by their trading partners. Threatening a member with negative feedback or insulting them usually stiffens their resolve and makes them less accommodating and cooperative. While leaving negative feedback is sometimes appropriate, resorting to harsh measures too quickly can make the situation worse than it is."

Shhhh you clearly aren't going to admit you were wrong but I do strongly suggest that you read the link. I've only quoted one of the relevant bits

Pingpong · 25/06/2009 23:23

and johnworf yes all sellers like prompt payment and yes 7 days is the limit before an unpaid dispute can be opened but they still get an additional 8 days after that before the case is closed so really they have 15 days absolute maximum to pay.

johnworf · 26/06/2009 08:52

Glad I don't sell anything to you smac. Having to wait almost 2 weeks for payment?

Pingpong · 26/06/2009 09:01

What an odd thing to say johnworf I don't take 2 weeks to pay. I am a prompt payer and a prompt poster when selling. All I'm saying is that when you open an unpaid item dispute the seller still has a further 8 days to pay.

Pingpong · 26/06/2009 09:10

sorry I meant the buyer still has a further 8 days to pay.

shhhh · 26/06/2009 10:38

Thanks johnworf for the replies..
As I said, no result is going to come from this thread. I have the replies I need and yes I wasn't aware a buyer had upto 7 days to pay, but im not ignorant. Just have other things in life to occupy myself with than ebay.

Must make a note to myelf to read ebays T&C tonight before bed.

Thanks everyone.
