Clothes wrong size - what to do?

cuppachar · 25/04/2009 15:30

I won a mixed bundle of 12-18 month clothes. They've turned up and 4 of the 8 items are not 12-18 months - two are 6-9 months, one is 6-12 months and one is 18-24 months. I wish I hadn't bought them and would prefer a full refund.

However, I won them for 99p + £2.80 postage, and the seller paid £4.45 postage so she is obviously out of pocket already.

This is the 2nd ebay "win" where I've been unhappy with the item but where it doesn't seem fair or worth it to ask for a refund, but at the same time I don't want to keep wasting money. So what should I do?

Or AIBU as it's such a small sum of money?

Oh, also, I've just looked at the picture in the listing and 2 of the items haven't been sent to me but have been replaced by the 3 smaller size items.

tricky one! Under usual circumstances you would return them for a refund (plenty of reasons to do so) but as you would only get 99p + £2.80 back you will be out of pocket as you have to pay for the return.

All I can suggest is a carefully worded email to the seller pointing out all the mistakes. Explain that these items are simply not what she advertised and what you bid on. Maybe then wait for her reply. Try to coax her into refunding you without having to return them.

you don't have to pay for the return as they're not as described - she should refund your postage costs.

Poor her though, she will be seriously out of pocket, daft mare

I know - I do feel a bit bad for her, but then she is in the wrong, so it's ridiculous I'm the one who ends up feeling guilty! I think I'll ask for a full refund, and say I can either take them to a charity shop or she'll have to pay for return postage (£4.45) if she wants them back.

I only started using ebay a few weeks ago and it's been quite fun so far but I really hate stuff like this - before I know it I'll be apologising to her for no reason other than British politeness!!

thanks for the suggestions!

I would leave it - FGS she is out of pocket already. Out of the 8 items, you can use 5 of them (one is too big so you can keep it for later), I would just donate the other 3 items for charity.

You havent done badly really to get 5 items of clothing for 99p plus P&P. They would have cost you more at a charity shop...

I would drop her a line and point out her mistake and then leave it. You could also leave her neutral possibly negative feedback if you wanted to make a point

Have you actually checked how large the clothes are (ie not whats on the label). I bought a huge bundle of clothes for ds1 once that was all age 18-24m but had some with larger or smaller size labels in. It was all what the seller had used on her son at age 18-24m.

I would have said to just leave it and put it down to experience (ie never buy bundles!) but i would at least email her to say where are the two items in the photo that you have subsituted with these items that are a different (too small) size.

Maybe she took them out when the bundle went for only 99p or when she realised the postage would be higher than she thought.

Tryharder, I know I haven't done badly but she shouldn't send me wrong stuff just because she's miffed at only selling for 99p. I did drop her a line (politely) and have had several really abusive messages in return, and she's posted positive feedback for me (as sellers can't leave negative feedback) but with a really negative comment, saying I am rude and a timewaster and took 3 weeks to pay (even though the auction only ended 11 days ago). Nice lady.

Anyway I've given her negative feedback but won't be having any further contact.

Flibbertyjibbet - the 6-9 and 6-12 month clothes are really small and no good. The 18-24 month top will be OK in the future.

Anyway, you live and learn and I guess to some extent you get what you pay for - it wasn't the bargain I thought it was! Sorry I know this sounds petty when it's such small sums of money but I just expect people to be honest that's all. (naive maybe!)

you can get the negative comment removed from your feedback

Tryharder · 27/04/2009 16:11

Cuppachar, if she's sent you nasty emails and left negative comments on the feedback then I take back what I said - I was feeling sorry for her.

You should put in a dispute and get your money back.

cuppachar · 27/04/2009 19:20

Thanks Tryharder

So how would I get negative feedback removed?

TBH I'm not that bothered about the feedback because I don't think most people will take it seriously - she's put "Very RUDE!! Took 3 weeks to pay, Absolute TIMEWASTER!!!! BE WARNED STAY AWAY!!!" and I've posted a reply saying "This feedback was left 11 days after the auction finished so clearly untrue." A lot of my other feedback mentions what a fast payer I am (I always pay same day).

I did tell her I wouldn't pursue a refund through ebay, but that was before her feedback so maybe I will... Can't really be bothered though for a couple of quid so I think I'll just walk away...
