My new ebay wooden garden bench has split when I assembled it! What should I do?

Just made it up there, it's brand new, teak and was flat packed. It was quite hard to join all the bits as they didn't really fit too well (very tight) and my DH had to press really hard on it to get it all to join. I have noticed that the top of one arm of the bench has split during the assembly, probably cos the bits haven't been prepared to fit correctly! It also came with dowels to secure the bench and they won't fit either! It has 4 screws in it and as it's such a tight fit it should be totally fine without the dowels anyway.

But I am really annoyed about the wood splitting, you can't see it right away but it's about a 5 inch long crack and I'm not sure if it might fall apart with the weather? But it would be such a PITA to send it back, I would need to pay for it and arrange courier etc. Do you think I should say anything to the seller anyway? The service was fine other than that but selling benches that don't really fit together properly isn't on!

depends.

It's very common with self assembly items for this to happen if you are not really careful when putting it together.

My dh is a bit rough when he assembles stuff and I have had to intervene a couple of times in an annoying wifey way when he has applied too much force tightening stuff.

Only you can tell whether it is shoddily made or whether it is a reasonable for the price you paid.

does the seller sell lots of these or is the bench a one off?

if it was a genuinely faulty item I don't see why you would have to pay to send it back.

Would the seller not just send a replacement?

The seller has good feedback (99.6%) and is a power seller, selling indoor and outdoor furniture so I don't think it's shoddy quality, just that the bits of wood that are meant to join don't fit correctly! It was £114 but I specifically wanted teak and it's is far more expensive in your average shop.

There was no other way for it to fit together than to use force because the fittings were too tight so that's what caused the split. I'm just a bit . Might try to go down the road of a wood glue or something, or just leave it, hmmmmm. Or maybe email him? Don't know!

If you are 100% sure whoever assembled it is no way to blame I would email the seller and explain what has happened and take it from there.

they might send you a replacement arm piece?

Good luck. This sort of thing is SO annoying
