Sure it's been done before but a first for me - my sold item not received, what do I do?

Not sold many things on eBay so pretty new to it all.
First problem as a seller.
Got email today that a Paypal dispute has been opened for non-receipt of an item.
(Wouldn't it have been politer to email me through eBay first? not important anyway i guess.)

I posted it on the 4th March - have a receipt showing proof of postage but didn't insure it or anything, not recorded delivery, etc.
Was a Tomy photo book, she paid £16 + £4 p&p
(cost me £4.20 postage which i knew it would but was willing to take the 20p hit and was using recycled packaging anyway).

I have emailed her through eBay to say i have received the notification email and as it's my first time having a problem i am checking what i need to do next but to let her know i am acting on it.
And could she let me know if it does arrive.
(hope this was OK to do as i've sent it now!)

What's next? What do I do now?? feel a bit sick about it although it's not worth stressing over, if she doesn't ever get it and gets refunded it's not huge money really.
How do i know she hasn't got it?
Most advice I've seen on here & eBay is about the other side when you don't receive something as a buyer so interested to see what advice i get here.

TIA

issue a refund. paypal will find in her favour anyway, so do it now and seeth

hopefully your proof of purchase will get you a refubd from royal mail. you're generally covered for 100x1st/2nd class stamp. you need to wait 15working days from expected date of delivery.

unfortunatly you dont know if she has recieved it

VinoEsmeralda · 14/03/2009 15:36

IMO a bit rapid to claim non receipt and no contact with yourself... has she claimed through Ebay or Paypal only?

Saltire · 14/03/2009 15:44

You could always do what I did once, and emailed the seller and say "I will need to check with the tracking service as I sent it recorded". He emailed me back (after claiming he hadn't got it) and said "it didn't come recorded delivery".
However, paypal did rule in his favour.

I find that people tend to claim through paypal instead of ebay, becasue paypal 8always* rules in favour of the buyer and they get a refund

Vino - only through Paypal as far as i can tell.
Isn't a bit off that she didn't even email me? i mean i would email a seller first to check they really had posted it and starting a dispute.

I suppose she's waited 8 posting days which seems fair enough.

Just remembered that she did give me some hassle-y emails before i posted it too, grr.
And asked if i was posting 1st class. i said no, explained i was using the 3-5 day service for 4.20, if she wanted to pay more postage i would post it 1st class but she said no.
(actually if she'd read my response carefully i said i would post 1st class if it fit in the £5 bracket and it probably would have but she didn't pick up on that).

Will give it a few more days i think. What do i do with RM?

you need a claim form from royal mail. i have to do one next week for the same thing good job i always get proof of postage

JustKeepSwimming · 14/03/2009 15:52

OK, will pop in and get one next week ready.
Do i only fill it in after she's been refunded?

Is my receipt thing 'proof of postage'? i hope so!

i alwyas fill in a proof of postage form, or ask for one at the post office. your receipt might be ok.

pebbles79 · 14/03/2009 18:14

The problem with claiming through Royal mail is that they send something to the buyer asking them to confirm that the item wasn't received. If they don't send that back then you won't get your refund, that's what happened to me

JustKeepSwimming · 14/03/2009 19:09

Oh great.
So i get a buyer who hassles me pre-purchase.
Then claims not to have received the item.
Will get a refund almost definitely.
And i am reliant on her for my refund.

Fab system...

Ho hum, at least not loads of money

This happened to me. The buyer claimed her item had not arrived - she emailed me 2 MONTHS after I posted it. I sent a claim form to Royal Mail who sent me a book of stamps as compensation (this covered the postage cost only, not the replacement cost of the item itself...)

I just put a cheque in the post to her (send recorded delivery to cover my arse)as so much time had passed I couldnt do a refund through paypal.

She was quite polite in her emails but in the end, I dont know her from Adam, she could have received the item but then pretended it didnt arrive and she's got her money back....

It's shite but there you go. I have learned a lesson from it now and have started sending anything of value by recorded delivery.

JustKeepSwimming · 16/03/2009 11:37

Sorry to hear that Tryharder

Anyway, she emailed this morning to say the item has arrived.....

hope she rmeembers to sort out the paypal dispute thing or i will have to remind her....
