Am looking to have a clearout & raise some much needed cash. I have mainly books ,but also some childrens clothing & toys. Which do you think would be best - have never done either!

I would go for the boot sale myself, less hassle

Thanks MaryB I was thinking along the same lines as you but wondered if I could make more on e-bay with a bit of work !!?

Good quality branded kids clothes sell well on ebay. A particular mention for Mini-Boden which sells for stupid prices, often 2/3 of the new price even for clothes with quite a bit of wear.

Non-brandname clothes probably not worth ebaying unless you can put together a really good bundle.

Prices at car boot sales are rock bottom -- you'll end up selling kids clothes at three items for £1. Books probably similar.

Thanks frogs - It's hard to believe some of the mini-boden listings - Why are they SO keen to buy ?? DD had quite a bit in the past - not so much now and it isn't that fantastic! Still will try & encourage her to look after current "stuff" so we can get a good price .

Another possibility is an NCT Nearly New sale. Everyone there is looking for kid's clothing, equipment, toys and books. You label things in advance with a price and you get back what you don't sell, although the NCT takes 30% of your sales. (This may vary from branch to branch.) It is a good way to sell good condition, non-designer kid's clothes and I have found that kid's books and toys go really well too. Look at the NCT site to find one near you. You can then take what's left to a car boot sale.

I have done both and will never boot again. At the boot, the haggling is done down the way, so you suggest a price and the cheeky sods argue you down.

On ebay, the price goes up.

Obviously you have the hassle of going to the post office etc, but most boot sales start at silly o'clock in the morning so that's a hassle in itself.

I have never successfully sold books at a boot sale.

The only bonus of a boot sale to me is having the actual cash in your hand at the end of the sale, it feels very tangible. But looking back, I could kick myself for selling stuff for a few quid at the boot sale before I discovered ebay.

It's true, there are some brands where apparent logic goes out of the window and ebayers seem willing to pay almost full price for used items. Boden, Joules etc are a case in point.

I think many people shop on those websites thinking 'I'll get most of my money back anyway, on ebay'!!
