i sold a ready bed a couple of weeks ago which my dd had used once before she was bought a second that she preferred

i tested the bed before i sent it out and it didnt deflate at all but the buyer is claiming that when she used it at the weekend it deflated half way through the night and therefore has a puncture. She is demanding a refund and I know it was fine when it left me, what do i do?

I packaged it up carefully in its original box and wrapped in bubble wrap

I think you should let her return it, refund the money.
I'm presuming when you inflated the bed to test it, you left it up an hour or so, then packed it all away? A slow puncture can take hours to deflate

Tell the buyer to send it back to oyu, and as soon as you receive it and check it you will issue a refund. Don't refund until you get the goods back.

i left it inflated for 2 days - to be fair no one slept on it

if she returns it what exactly do I havew to refund?

is it the cost of the item, the cost plus postage or what?

And do i have to refund her 2 lots of postage?

I think you could offer to share the postage costs. If you do not have a returns policy specified, you could tell the byer you will return the item but she will have to pay for return postage.

I agree that you should check it yourself before you refund

There is the chance that she/her child is the one who punctured it. This is a difficult situation - you checked it and say it was fine, she claims it was punctured.

gingernutlover · 18/02/2009 08:34

okay, i have emailed to ask that she re inflates the bed and ensures the stopper is fully in otherwise it will deflate (this happened to my mum the first time she used the bed so I am being genuine)

if she refuses to do this or says it still deflates i ask her to send it back yeah

if she is being genuine it seems unfair that this will cost her anything but I am convinced the bed was fine when i sent it, so if it has a puncture it must have happened her end, but then I can never prove that can i

soupdragon, yes that is what concerns me

i sold her the item 14 days ago and it has been in her house for at least a week of that, before she told me of the fault. How do I know that she hasnt used it once and no longer needs it? Or like you say, her or her child has punctured it.

hmmm well no reply yet, but maybe she is slow to get to her emails

how odd, the same thing happened to me last month.

the woman who bought it had apparently had trouble paying for at least one item before so I was on alert that she might flake on me

she claimed a puncture; i asked her to first check the stopper, then put it in a bath tub of water to see where bubbles were coming out. I offered a refund if she could determine it was faulty and post it back to me.

never heard back - no feedback either - assuming the issue is just dead now

good luck, in future maybe post a returns policy?

gingernutlover · 19/02/2009 20:27

still nothing from her

i have had somthing similar happen before when i sold some nappies, the buyer claimed they were stained and asked for partial refund, then when i asked for photos of stains she never contacted me again.

However, this lady has 100% positive feedback and has left me good feedback (apparently before checking the item if she is genuine) I guess it's wait and see - she may work funny shifts or somthing

am i right in thinking i dont have to refund the return postage?
