Does anyone refund postage if it's cheaper than they expected?

I sold an item today with £2.99 p+p 2nd class. When I went to the post office I found it actually only cost £1.94 to post it 1st class.

I never intend to make profit on postage, and I packed it in recycled stuff so that didn't cost me anything.

I feel like the right thing to do is refund the buyer £1. Is this normal to do, or am I being a bit soft and looking a gift horse in the mouth?

i always refund excess postage

EachPeachPearMum · 05/12/2008 16:04

It's always nice when sellers do, though many do not
Make sure you have covered your fees though, before you make a refund.

UnfortunatelyMe · 05/12/2008 16:05

never. it pays for the ebay/paypal fees.

EggyChick · 05/12/2008 16:10

I did and got a lovely email back from the very happy buyer. It was only £1.40 but I had grossly overestimated the postage charge. You're not obliged to though.

meemar · 05/12/2008 16:14

I get what you are saying about covering ebay/paypal fees, but I always factor those into the total sale price i.e, I never have a starting price which is lower than I am prepared to receive, and this always includes my fees.

I will refund her, it feels right and as it was buy-it-now I've got what I wanted for it anyway.

Thanks for the responses

I used to do this, and think like this, then after a while thought, no other bugger does this...and have never looked back TBH. Thats karma seems to be stuck somewhere along the way lol

southeastastra · 05/12/2008 19:58

you can get negs removed now do you know cc?

mogs0 · 05/12/2008 20:05

I refunded £2 p&p on Monday after the buyer won two of my auctions and she hasn't acknowledged the refund or left feedback. If it's under £1 I don't usually refund but if it's any more I do.

lisad123 · 05/12/2008 20:13

if its above £3 I do, if not i dont really worry. P&P covers petrol or time to get to PO too. My local one is often shut so have to take the town, which is a good trip to get to.

UnfortunatelyMe · 05/12/2008 20:13

Yes sea, I got a neg from a newbie and when he was NARUed it vanished with him...most pleasing

thisisyesterday · 05/12/2008 20:22

oooh timely thread!
I just posted some stuff which I had worked out would cost £15 to send.
my scales must be off, because it was actually only £7

feel really bad now, so was planning to refund the excess, although part of me reeeeeeeeeally could do with the extra few quid.

will do it

sarah573 · 05/12/2008 22:31

TIY - I think you should give some of that back really!! I would keep £2 for fees, packing ect and refund the difference, which would be £6. I would be seriously miffed I had paid £15 and the parcel arrived with £7 on it, and would probably (if after contacting you the problem wasn't resolved) leave bad feedback.

Meemar, I think £1 is a reasonable charge on top of actual postage, and I wouldn't feel obliged to return it.

ELMOchristmascountdown · 05/12/2008 22:47

i give back if there's more than £1 excess by time i've paid fees and packaging.

i once had a guy complained i'd charged 30p more than on packet.

when i explained i had to pay for giffy bag and bubble wrap and get to post office with 2 toddlers he stopped demanding it back.

still gave me a neutral

wanker

bizarrely mogs0 I have actually looked at your auctions tonight, completely coincidentally.

mogs0 · 07/12/2008 18:46

Oooh, really? Are you bidding?!!! - I'm quite unoriginal with my Usernames! I thought everything was finishing at 8pm but have just realised that it's staggered until 10pm.
