Hi everyone,

I have just sold my first item for just under £17 - yippee!
I think however I have undercharged postage - I put the postage as £3 but the item i am sending is 500g in weight and therefore postage alone is £2.50 before I have added packaging. I said in my listing that it would be sent standard first class.

My buyer is showing up as address unconfirmed but has 100% positive feedback. Paypal says that if you send to an unconfirmed address you will not get seller protection.

What is the best way to post the item and try to cover myself in case something goes wrong without going way over my undercharged postage?

Thanks!

Swallow it, just send it and forget about the money lost on postage. I made the very same mistake and it wasn't worth trying to rectify as I got bad feedback and then a low score as, like you, I had just started out selling stuff. Just send the item and forget about the postage costs, - live and learn. Perhaps you could pay the extra for recorded delivery if you are worried. Most unconfirmed addresses usually tend to be ok, (that was what I read on the ebay forum anyway).

all as Humpdebump says - I do recommend sending recorded though

JerricaBenton · 27/11/2008 13:12

as its only £17, i wouldnt bother with recorded, as you can claim that £17 back from Royal mail, should your buyer make a claim against you.

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 27/11/2008 13:17

Agree - standard 1st class is insured up to £30ish anyway. But what you won't get is a signature to proove it has veen delivered. You can get a proof of postage with a 1st class though - hang on to that.

Address unconfrimed happens quite a lot I think. Not really a big deal.

Wouldn't worry about the unconfirmed but agree with slm do recorded. I am doing all mine recorded now as even proof of postage receipt not enough if buyer claims item not recieved. You will have to refund them not worth it for extra 70p.
Especially at this time of year with all the extra mail anyway.

don't count on the fact you can claim from RM with the standard postage.
If a buyer claims for non receipt they will get a refund from paypal as you can't give a tracking number.
If you try to claim from RM they will need the form filling in by the buyer, and the buyer just may not bother filling in this form for you - therefor you won't get a refund from RM. Also claiming from RM is a pain especially with ebay stuff

EachPeachPearMum · 27/11/2008 15:23

Make sure you get proof of postage from the PO when you send it.
To confirm their address- just email them and ask- they may not have realised it's unconfirmed.
re packaging costs- I recycle from everything I've bought!

JerricaBenton · 27/11/2008 17:20

I have sent many items by recorded lately, none have shown online with a signature! So i dont bother, as I could have potentially lost 10 paypal claims and paid an extra £7 for teh privilage!

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 27/11/2008 17:41

JB...you may not have hte signature but in teh event of a claim RM will be able to trace it.

JerricaBenton · 27/11/2008 18:19

Paypal will only accept a signature though, so i would lose the dispute

JerricaBenton · 27/11/2008 18:20

And unscruplous buyers can check online with the tracking number on the package, see there is no signature & out in a dispute knowing that they will win.
