If I have received an instant payment notification email from paypal, the money is in my account and I'm safe to give the item away (it's a pick up only), is that right?

No, dont do it.
You will have no proof that you delivered the item, and the buyer could claim thier money back.
Cash on collection is the only safe thing for pick up items.

Ah, he's already paid by paypal. Is there not some sort of receipt I can get him to sign?

Paypal won't accept anything other than RM as proof of delivery. Refund the paypal payment and ask for cash on collection, unless you can afford to lose the money if he/she is a dodgy buyer.

monkeymonkeymonkey · 12/11/2008 17:26

If he makes a claim paypal will ask you to prove you delivered it. That needs to be with a trackable method eg recorded delivery. A reciept signed by him wont count.
The safest thing is to refund the paypal payment and make him pay cash.

He has 100% feedback and lots of nice comments....

There is a risk, but if you're confident it's a small one go ahead this time. But in future specify cash on collection only for pickup.

Lilyloo · 12/11/2008 19:46

You have to offer paypal now even on collection (another money making scheme by ebay)
So not sure you can specify cash on collection anyway!
Just get him to sign a receipt and hopefully if he has good feedback it will be ok!

sixlostmonkeys · 12/11/2008 19:58

you could always send him a receipt via recorded delivery after he has collected - tho I'd wait a day or so and see if he leaves feedback first. he may be a lovely chap and would take offense if he suspected mistrust - iyswim

Well he seemed a lovely chap when he came to collect, and has left me really good feedback, so I guess there are some nice people left

Thanks for the tips though, I wouldn't even have considered that a buyer might collect then file a dispute, and will definitely bear it in mind in the future.
