Postage Price....would you be cheesed off??

Whenever I charge postage on my Ebay items I only ever charge what it actually costs me to post.

I posted an item today & I had charged £4.99 but it actually cost me much less then I thought it would.

It only cost me £2.66 for the actual postage.

Now, it was packaged in a proper mail bag with documents enclosed address holder & our "local" post office is a 5 min train journey away (I don't drive) so I guess the extra £2.33 could cover that (which it wouldn't btw) but would you be cheesed off by how much postage you were charged & how much it actually cost to send??

I hate overcharging for postage which is why I never do so I feel really bad.

Trouble is I have no funds in my PP account so I can't issue a refund

Don't want to get negged....

It is over the top to be honest. 50p on top of actual postage is about right.
You could wait until the buyer complains or offer a partial refund now. If you havn't got the funds you could message them and explain, and refund when you have the money.

Lilyloo · 21/10/2008 22:21

I would refund too maybe offer to send it when you have funds.

MrsMagooo · 22/10/2008 10:38

I emailed the buyer on Monday evening to say I had overcharged & need to refund her, I asked for her email address as I figured I would just send the money but send a little extra to cover what PP will deduct with it not being an offical refund IYKWIM.

Did they pay by paypal? If so, then just do a partial refund on the transaction. No need to know their email address or other details.

But they knew in advance how much you were going to charge for postage, and paid it. So they have no right to complain and you don't need to refund anything.

pippibluestocking · 22/10/2008 11:49

Don't you work out the postage costs via the Post Office link before listing? That way, you know how much it is going to cost before you list? I would send a refund by cheque if I were you.

MrsMagooo · 22/10/2008 15:56

MrLSG I can't send a refund via the normal refund route as I have no funds in my PP account so it won't allow me to issue a refund - daft really. Still no reply as yet. I did think what you said but felt bad that it was £2.33 less then I quoted as felt that was quite steep.

Pippi I'm usually very good at getting the postage costs right as have been Ebaying for a few years & sell the same kind of things so. I generally under charge for postage as I know high postage costs put me off as a buyer, this one just turned out much less then I thought.

Some people put slightly higher postage to reduce the starting price (and fees), so long as she didn't mind paying I wouldn't worry.

wheresthehamster · 27/10/2008 18:02

Buyers factor in postage in the total price when bidding so most wouldn't expect a refund I would have thought. Your buyer should take into account the packaging and whatever is left (not much) write off as travel expenses to and from the PO. That's what I would do.

If ever you are in this situation again and feel guilty why don't you buy stamps to the value of the excess and stick them in the parcel or under the address label? Then you can let the buyer know

chipmonkey · 27/10/2008 18:38

Would someone really neg you for that? Unless the postage was WAY ott, as in charged 10.00 when only cost 2.50, I wouldn't even comment!

sixlostmonkeys · 27/10/2008 18:58

I have seen negs for 30p over the stamp price, so yes chip, they would/could

chipmonkey · 27/10/2008 19:13

slm, really, that is shocking!

sixlostmonkeys · 27/10/2008 19:27

mind you, I've also seen neg feedback stating "CD album not as good as their first one"

lauraloola · 27/10/2008 20:51

I wouldnt worry about it. I expect to pay a bit more for packaging and travel. TBH they probably wont even notice.

lillypumpkinpie · 27/10/2008 21:00

I had a seller refund me 47p today.I was very surprised as I had thought her postage charges perfectly reasonable or I wouldn't have bid on her item.

I was a nice surprise though

MrsMagooo · 29/10/2008 17:49

Well the buyer never got back to me but left positive feedback so I guess she was happy with the postage she paid!!
