Its jacket so i don't want to wash it. I think i've only ever worn it once so its not dirty in any way. Its been in the cupboard for a year so has a slightly mustly smell. Whats the best way to get rid of this. Its a 100% cotton. Any tips?

I was thinking 10 minutes in the tumble dryer?

A slight misting of high quality (I use Crabtree and Evelyn) room spray?

Geepers · 14/10/2008 19:12

just wash it. Someone has paid you good money for it, and wil expect something that is clean and smells fresh

Geepers · 14/10/2008 19:14

christ, don't go spraying chemicals all over it, it will stink even more.

LittleMissBliss · 14/10/2008 19:17

I think if i wash it it will look worn and its not dirty i've only ever worn it once (for a short period of time as it is a jacket) its in no way dirty. I sold it as used not new. and it wasn't expensive. It only smells musty because its been in my cupboard for a year. I just want it to smell fresh.

I'd rather have something arrive looking washed, than something that I have to wash because it smells which then will look washed anyway.

LittleMissBliss · 14/10/2008 19:18

I think it cost me 6x the ammount that it was sold for. i don't really want to spray it.

Jackets can loose all their shape when they are washed as they are starched in the factory.

wash it.

have had musty smelling items and it really puts me off. i would probably leave negative for musty smelling clothes.

LittleMissBliss · 14/10/2008 19:21

If i got something that smelt a little musty i think i'd air it then spray my own perfume on it.

Tumble dry if dryer has a low or cold 'airing' setting - usually the last ten minutes of a cycle. Don't risk it shrinking on a hot cycle. Could you get some of those tumble dryer fragrance sheets, if they are still made?

LittleMissBliss · 14/10/2008 19:22

or wash it if it was a top or skirt or something

Geepers · 14/10/2008 19:24

If I got something musty it would put me off ever wanting to wear it. Bad associations and all that. I'd wonder what else had happened to it if it arrived smelly.

LittleMissBliss · 14/10/2008 19:25

Chippy thats a good plan think i could make one from soaking a tea towl or something in fabric softner so it has that lovely washing smell then when thats dry tumble drying them together?

IotasCat · 14/10/2008 19:27

dry clean it

LittleMissBliss · 14/10/2008 19:27

Its not gross smelling just a tad musty it hasn't been there for 5 years or anthing.

OP posts:
LittleMissBliss · 14/10/2008 19:28

they paid £4 for it it would cost more than that to dry clean it!

Well maybe you should have checked how it smelt before you put it up for sale then! I've bought musty stuff before and however cheap it was it makes me really angry - I gave it all away and gave the seller a crap rating.

Gettingbiggernow · 14/10/2008 19:31

If it's not washable, but it's clean anyway, it just needs air to get to it.

You will need to spray it IMO, but do it as a very light mist from a distance of about 3 feet - don't get up close to it or wet it with spray. Then hang it somewhere warm overnight like an airing cupboard ideally, or on a hanger on a radiator if you have the heating on, and with tumble drier sheets between the hanger and the jacket.

ChippyMinton · 14/10/2008 19:35

Would you rinse the towel? I wouldn't like to say - you don't want to risk marking the jacket.

Mind you it's £4. Not really worth worrying about too much.

LittleMissBliss · 14/10/2008 19:46

Just done the tea towel and fabric softner tuble dryer jobby and the jacket now smells gorgeous! Like fresh laundry!
