A lady I am on the phone with now is interested in paying to have someone ebay for her as she doesnt have a computer and doesnt know how. What percentage would you charge someone for doing this?

I wouldn't charge but then I am a pushover.

There are companies who do this and I think they charge a high % - might be worth googling to find out then undercutting them all. (am assuming you are no longer on the phone to her)

i wouldnt to be honest. If you tell someone it sells for 10 on ebay they say Oh I want 20, you say right take it to bootsale then, good luck, they say no i want you to ebay it...Right they sell for ten quid...But i want 20........ If you can get past that 20% of the profit after fees.

Eenybeeny, how is she prepared to pay? On a per item basis or on a success basis? If it doesn't sell, what happens to your fees? Is it BIN or auction? Who decides the BIN or starting price? Bear in mind, it is sometimes necessary to start at a low price to attract the punters but there is of course the risk that it goes for a low price as a result.

These issues have to be worked through. Her expectations, in particular, need to be managed. Also, have you seen the goods? Do You think they will sell?

hmmm

Its all starting to seem a little bit of a minefield. I just responded to an ad this woman placed looking for someone to ebay for her. Its all antiques. I am going to do this with a friend but that is very informal and not a problem! Doing it for someone else I am not sure. I wouldnt even begin to know how to do it fairly for all parties!

I assume it would be something like 20% on a success basis plus she would cover the cost of the listing so if it didnt sell I would not be out of pocket.

Eeny, do you know anything about antiques? How do you assess their value/provenance and whether they are real or fake? Seems quite risky to me.

eeny - I would be careful if I were you, these antiques could be stolen!

MummyLovesPrams · 08/07/2008 18:07

Hi Eeny hun,

I do it for friends/family & they cover the cost of the listing, the FVF & then give me 10% of what it sells for.

I wasn't fussed about taking a profit just as long as fees were covered but they always insist on giving me something so we agreed on 10% as I don't feel so bad that way & plus I get a little extra cash to spend on the babies

BUT I wouldn't do it for some random person as it could lead to all sorts of trouble as the girls above have said!!

Xx

how about they cover the cost of listing and the other stuff that you share the money out however you feel suitable.

eenybeeny · 09/07/2008 10:21

well I must be so trusting and naive I never thought of any of that!! I am sure this woman is genuine she seems elderly and said she is downsizing and wants to clear out her attic. BUT I do feel rather put off doing it now! I havent heard back from her anyway so think I will pass!! Thanks for the advice!
