Advice Needed for Someone I Think is Trying to Pull a Fast One

I sold a DVD player on eBay that was only tested for power (I didn't have all the leads for it so could only plug it in). I stated that it was only tested for power and that it was sold as seen and no returns on the listing.

The buyer was huffing and puffing over various bits before it was sold but did buy it.

All well or so I thought.

Now they've messaged me to say it's blown up their TV (a likely story, excuse me while I roll my eyes) but that it's still working (weird if it's blown their tv up but not the actual device!).

I've said they can send it back and I'll take a look at it but I really do think they're trying to pull a fast one and want a refund because they couldn't get the other parts for it (namely a remote) and it will likely turn up damaged (or they'll try and keep the player but want their money back).

What else can I do or need to do?

Why did you say they could send it back?

SparklyGlitterballs · 27/05/2025 11:52

Nope, you listed as sold as seen and no returns. They took that risk so can't demand to send it back or have their money back. I assume it wasn't listed for much anyway?

Did you list as spares or repair or untested and priced accordingly? If so I wouldn't take a return even if it was faulty.

Trying to be nice and don't want it affecting my 100% good feedback.

You are being very kind and generous by agreeing to accept a return, in the circumstances.

If they do return it make sure they go through the returns process through their eBay account and ask them to provide you with photos. If it is returned damaged report to eBay, don’t just accept it.

Yes, parts or not working.

Thank you I will. Photos is a good idea.

Not heard anything back so I guess they really were only just interested in trying to keep the item and the money. I haven't given them a refund and won't if they try again. Scammers.

Thanks everyone.

You can buy a brand new DVD player for less than £25 - bizarre that they should even pay £17.99 for one with missing remote, not guaranteed to be working.

To be fair it was rather a fancy one back in the day. They still go for 70-100 in full working condition and boxed.
