New "buyer protection fee" of 4% added to the seller's price

Payment to seller delayed until 48 hrs after item received which will force us to use Tracking or their new Simple Postage...

Easier listing - that remains to be seen!

Sorry for typo in title!

What's a buyer protection fee?

And the postage thing I couldn't be bothered reading about last time I looked when they advertised it was free to sell..
What's that all about?

I have some stuff to sell but don't want it to be an enormous drag and so have not bothered even with FB Marketplace.

4% plus 75p flat fee every item! Which will bump up the price of low value items to the buyer a lot.

If you use untracked as a seller you get payment after 14 days (!)

I've only had a quick look at Simple Postage but it uses Royal Mail and Evri. You can opt out for now but that may change. Not sure if they force you to use a tracked service? So postage costs to buyer will increase making items less appealing. Also, I normally use RM and don't want to be forced to use Evri. Further to get to the drop off points and less reliable!

@mumda they removed the fee to private sellers. Now there's going to be a fee added before the price a buyer sees. They pay it to eBay rather than eBay taking a fraction of the price a seller charges.

I find listing reasonably easy with Vinted and eBay. But depending on the item mine tend to sit for ages not selling.

I wonder whether this is to stop buyers from buying something and then claiming they didn't receive it, or then returning an item that never gets back to the seller. In those scenarios eBay forces a full refund to the buyer, the seller loses the item and is made to refund the money plus any associated fees.
It would also stop sellers from simply not sending items or sending bricks instead of phones. Currently, eBay force a refund and then have to attempt to recover the payment.

Really not happy about these changes. Have been selling on eBay for years & years.

recently dipped my toes and sold something on Vinted, forced to post it via Evri as the buyers get a menu of couriers to choose from… usually use RM. Says item has arrived via Evri to buyers local Tesco via tracking. Buyer has been there twice and Tesco say it’s not there! Meanwhile, Vinted have retained my money 😡 and the sale has been suspended pending further investigation!

I think both ebay & Vinted ought to release money to sellers as soon as there is tracking available to say item has been sent. That’s out of my hands once I’ve posted it and you can clearly see it’s been done so via tracking. Vinted or eBay should then liaise with the courier if there are any problems.

I got an email about this very thing this morning. Can't say I'm that pleased about it, there is a reason I have avoided vinted and to see eBay head down the same path is really disappointing.

I've been selling on eBay for years, lots of old clothes etc, all low priced so I use standard second class RM, using tracking will increase the prices making the purchase less appealing to potential buyers. Not releasing the money for 48 hours, or two weeks if it isn't tracked is awful.
I think I'll end all my listings at the end of January before the new changes come in.

I am contemplating ending all lower value items end of Jan, can't justify waiting on tracking for payments, especially after seller on eBay for 13 years!

I've been selling on eBay for 20 years. I'm getting fed up with the constant changes. The ending of seller's fees last year was great, but I was suspicious as it did seem too good to be true. Adding the fees on at the buyers end, still raises the prices so will cut sales. Also, previously the seller's fees were 4% plus 30p (or was it 35p?). Now the fees at the buyer's end will be 4% plus 75p!
It will be possible to switch off the eBay delivery. I choose between Evri and RM. I do Evri when I can (depending on item price and whether it's banned on Evri) because it's far more convenient for me. I can drop off at 8:30 on my way to work, rather than have to make a special trip and queue in the Post Office later in the day.
I also dislike how eBay have gone back to putting offers as a default on a listing. I have to remember to change it.

CranfordScones · 04/01/2025 10:06

ebay don't care about private sellers - they're quite a small proportion of their business. I just wish that ebay would decide on a policy and stop changing things under the pretence of making it better. Nowhere in their explanation can I find much about what additional protection buyers are being afforded for this extra fee.

sushibelt · 05/01/2025 08:31

I'm a private seller - so now I have to use tracked delivery and don't get paid until the tracking updates to delivered? That rules out lots of my smaller sales where I only make about £20p-£1 as I cover the postage rather than charge the buyer separately. I rely on trust and that the seller isn't going to try and scam me for a small item and send untracked. Pointless me doing this now.
