Will I get a full refund if I send an item back to a seller?

I brought something on ebay it arrived today and was not as described, and not what I wanted. If I send it back to the seller am I entitled to the full cost inc p&p back? I know that I have to pay return postage. Thanks

I think you do provided it is not as described, I wouldn't return it until the seller agrees to the refund though, you can also dispute through paypal if they won't agree to full refund for item not being as described.

auntypurple · 21/04/2008 16:07

Hiya Cargirl,
I wouldn't send it if the seller won't agree. Deff not as described, listing said maclaren xt with newer extending hood, and it's just a standard techno classic. I did pay by paypal, so will use that if I have too. Just hope I don't end up sending it back and not getting my money back. Thanks for the reply

Yes, and if the seller won't refund your postage you should put in a paypal dispute, cargirl's right, that will ensure you get your original postage back too.

If you send it back, make sure you use recorded/trackable shipping as paypal will need to check this to se it's been delivered. They will refund you once it's been received back by the seller.

If you don't use trackable, then you only have the seller's word they've got it back iyswim.

Paypal are very good if you are the buyer.

You could use parcel2go for a cheap trackable service with DHL. It's about £7.

Thanks flight. Have emailed the seller, just waiting on a response now. Just wanted make sure I knew where I stood before asking for my money back. Will be using the cheap courier too

Good luck!

auntypurple · 21/04/2008 17:19

Just a thought. I have just packed it all back in the box. Did I need to take some pics of the bits that are not as described? If so I will take it all back out again, need to open the box again anyway as I have not put the raincover back in.

Have you been told to send it back by the seller? I'd say it depends, if the seller has said this they are probably Ok and I wouldn't worry. I usually take a pic or two for my records but paypal aren't interested in pictures.
Theonly problem could be if the seller by any chance doesn't refund you, and then you'll have to prove to paypal that you've returned it and possibly that it was not as described. But I reckon most sellers who say, 'of course, send it back and I'll refund you' would not say that if they didn't intend to.

Were they pleasant when you emailed them?

auntypurple · 21/04/2008 17:37

They have just emailed back. Saying they are sorry, her dh took the details from a website and got it wrong. I never asked for a refund to start with and they offered a £10 refund. I have just sent another message asking if I can send it back for a full refund. They have been pleasant so far. Would paypal want photos's if the seller says send it back, then won't refund or will they just look at my ebay messages? Thanks for your help

No, paypal never want photos - I've offered several times!

The most they'd want is for a professional to confirm in writing that it isn't as described. That would be if the seller disagreed with the dispute.

You have a good seller there, they sound genuine and helpful. Don't worry. They have more to lose than you I think! I wouldn't worry about photos as they have admitted they are at fault and yes, paypal do look at messages.

I had a seller send me a techno once that was sold 'as seen' and when I asked careful questions to check it was Ok, they lied over and over again...it arrived and was a heap, honestly it was awful and stank and was falling to pieces...dirt all over...they disagreed with my dispute, basically said 'ha ha you believed us' but the dickheads had sent all of it through ebay messages, and they lost

I checked with paypal who said messages do count apparently.

I'd offered to settle with them if they refunded part of it, so I could sell it on for scrap basically, and they said no, till paypal told us I'd won and to send it back for a full refund. that quickly changed their minds and they gave me £30 back out of £50. I sold it for £25 after a good clean up.

Flight your very good at this, have you been doing ebay for very long? They have just replied to my email saying, that I can send it back for a full refund, as long as I send it back via parcelforce 24 hr del. I only know cheap dhl couriers(sp). Do I have to use parcel force? All messages are going via ebay, so I will keep them as proof if I don't get my refund. Thanks

Ask them why they are specifying parcelforce - you have the right to use whichever service you choose as long as it can be tracked and is insured for damage. How much did you pay - DHL one os only covered for £50, but there are others which also use DHL and cover for more.
(not sure of who, senditeasy is one I think?)

If they want parcelforce and you are Ok with it, go to senditnow.com, and book with them. It's 10.99 for the 48hr service and it is a subsidiary of parcelforce, but cheaper.

I use it a lot, it's covered for either £100 or £150.

Yes- a few years - used to help out on the answer boards at ebay but have forgotten a lot of my stuff!!

sixlostmonkeys is the hottest ebay property round here.

ImflightbutIcantlogintoday · 21/04/2008 18:05

Oh and senditnow also do the 24hr delivery for 11.99.

I can't work out why they are telling you which service to use!

auntypurple · 21/04/2008 19:07

Hiya,
I think they are probably trying to put me off sending it back. As they can see from my ebay account I use couriers direct, for £6.99 which is dhl 24hr service. Thats a bit cheaper than parcelforce. I have asked them for an address to send it to, and have not yet got a reply.

I paid £118 inc p&p. Couriers direct cover for £100 so I will probably use them.

Thanks again for your help, I will keep you updated as this goes on.

Ah. Well in that case perhaps not such nice sellers!!

They are not able to specify which service you use. I had this with a large pram - I wasoffered a refund if I used the same service she had, when I could have done it for less - I somehow didn't see that I wasn't bound to do that, but thought she might not refund the whole amount if I didn't - so I kept the thing. And sold it on at a huge loss! I have no idea why - oh yes, I liked it I think! Until I realised I couldn't live with the noise it kept making!!

I hope you get the address soon and they stop mucking about. Might be safer to go through paypal at this rate...
See how they are over the next few emails.

auntypurple · 21/04/2008 21:24

I have just got the sellers address and have booked a collection with dhl. I know when they come to collect and I can still get a tracking number, and it's still 24hr service. I will tell the seller it's dhl when it's on the way. Probably a bit mean, but I suppose I am covered by paypal if it all goes pear shaped.

I would be making a big loss if I sold it on as well, as it's not worth what I paid.
