i have had a message from paypal saying i have had £650 put into my account and by law they have to report it to money laundering services, or whatever it is. it says to go into my paypal account and provide the information they need
i havent had £650 put into my account, but there is a yellow box at the top asking to resolve or provide information.

the email seems to be real, and the yellow box isnt usually there, so what do i do?

i am so afraid of having anyone hack into my account so i havent clicked on anything yet.

dont know what to do ,,help!

its probably trying to get your details. whatever you do don't open the link from the emmail-go to your internet browser and go from there. bet there won't be anything there

tortoise · 16/04/2008 21:06

spam i would say. Delete and ignore.

Pavlovthecat · 16/04/2008 21:09

Delete. Go directly to your own paypal account and check your account balance/status there. Any legitimate messages with be there. Or maybe contact Paypal and forward the email to them for their own security team.

I have had a few emails from my 'bank' stating my online acc is suspended pending security issues and that I need to go via link to my account to confirm. Suspicious so called my bank and sent them the email. Since then I have had a few from different banks saying the same type of thing, banks I dont even bank with!!!

I think its called 'phishing'?

lizandlulu · 16/04/2008 21:10

there is no link in the email though, which is why it has got me wondering.
the email just want me to acutaly go into my paypal account and provide the info they need.

so am have to acutally be in my account iyswim.

go into your paypal account via paypal.com (NOT via the email). If the £650 is not there, go back to your email, and forward it to [email protected] then delete.

lizandlulu · 16/04/2008 21:12

i have gone into my account the usual way through ebay, there is not £650 in there, but the yellow box at the top asking for info.

THE YELLOW BOX IS THE LINK! Don't click it! They will be able to get your login/ password if you do that!

Pavlovthecat · 16/04/2008 21:14

ooh I dont know then. I guess you need to check your account. Can you do it on a different computer?

lizandlulu · 16/04/2008 21:14

oh im scared now.

i i have forwarded the email to spoof ebay, see what they have to say.

The yellow box is in your paypal account? Not the email? If its in the paypal site, click on it. But not if its in the email. Not if it has anything at all to do with the email.

tissy · 16/04/2008 21:16

sorry, I may have misunderstood! Is the yellow box in your account, or in the email?

lizandlulu · 16/04/2008 21:16

yes it is in the paypal account. not the email. i get loads of those i just block the sender.

I've had the same message recently from Paypal about EU money laundering laws and it was fine. There was no link in my email I was asked to go to my paypal account and follow the instructions. If I remeember once you have had a certain amount of money go in to your paypal account over say I year you have to go and make some verifications for them. All I needed to do was give them my home phone number which was called immediately by and automated service and then I had to type in a code which was on my pc screen. Simple and ok to do.

QuintessentialShadows · 16/04/2008 21:18

If you add together all your account activities in Paypal the last year, could you possibly have been paid this amount in total over time?

If you have, paypal will contact you to ask you to verify your account further, to ensure you are not a business, if you should be paying VAT etc.

Go to your paypal account as usual from the paypal website, without clicking on anything in any email, and check.

tissy · 16/04/2008 21:18

ok, it's possible that someone has tried to put the money into your account, but paypal won't clear it till you confirm it's yours.

If the yellow box is on your account details, it's safe to click it.

lizandlulu · 16/04/2008 21:20

i only sell bits and bobs, but it might have added up to that over a year.

ok, i will click on it, see what it says.

it wanted me to link and confirm my card. maybe that has to happen after a certain amount of time. i have had to follow the steps and pay £1. in a few days time i will get a 4 digit code to enter to comfirm it is my card.

i hope that is all it is!

thank you for all your advice.

QuintessentialShadows · 16/04/2008 21:26

I had to do that too, I dont think you have anything to worry about.

forkhandles · 16/04/2008 21:28

I've had to do that £1 thing to and it's fine, just part of becoming verfied I think!

MsPontipine · 17/04/2008 12:54

I had to do it - don't worry! If you're in your Paypal account ther's nothing to worry about. Any suspect emails claiming to be from Paypal forward them to Paypal to verfify their authencicity.
I had one a while back - very odd looking one claiming they needed to refund me so many 100 dollars. They confirmed it was a phishing email and yes it's clicking on the links that's dangerous. Paypal responded very promptly to confirm it was a fake.

Crankymum · 24/04/2008 21:06

I've just had a phishing one and being late at night did all the wrong things like clicking on link so have now spent evening sorting out, changing password etc. The phishing emails look so good - it told me I had several password failures and a link (which was broken) to reenter details. It was the bit about my pin that made me realise this was definately not right.

southeastastra · 24/04/2008 21:09

don't click on any weird emails supposedly from paypal, just delete them

Alexandersmummy · 24/04/2008 21:15

If Paypal email you, they always address emails to you using your full name that you registered them (e.g Dear Alexandersmummy)
The thing about money laundering as true, my ebay account had alot of money go through it over a few months and I had to verify after getting the email you got.
If use are unsure still forward the email to Pyalpal using paypalspoof email address
