Rude message and bad review from buyer

KirstenBlest · 08/03/2024 12:15

Sold something on Ebay and got a rude message from the buyer. The buyer presumably wants a refund, and has left me a negative review.
I consider the message offensive and have reported it to Ebay.
Will they do anything?

I'm not sure if the message the buyer sent me was menacing. Can anyone advise please?

I have tried asking for the feedback to be removed and reporting the buyer. Neither worked.

Why did they leave a bad review? Was it your fault in any way or are that just being an arse? Unless they ask for a refund i would just ignore it. I don't think ebay will help

Ps I had a rude message once and reported it. They did nothing, or i don't think they did. Maybe they gave the rude messager a telling off!

Depends on the circumstances, what's his complaint?

What did they say?

What was the message?

I doubt eBay will do anything tbh. No one can tell you if it was menacing without knowing what was said.

Report
KirstenBlest · 09/03/2024 12:52

The message contained something like (not quite the words but very similar) to
'You must be a complete slut if you walked around in these clothes. '
'I will ... give you a very bad review. '
'I have just got your address'

Slightly reworded so as not to be searchable.

Review was along the lines of:
'Item was not fit for purpose, unwearable and fit only for the trash can. It was filthy, rusted buttons and worn out'

It was worn, clean and looked used.

eBay won't do anything. I've been on there for over 10 years and somebody did this to me. They then asked for a refund, I'm not a business, just clearing out. It caused a lot of stress, in fact the buyer relisted the item at £50 more with my description. eBay refused to remove the neg. I closed my account.

eBay offers very little protection for sellers and there are buyers out there taking advantage of that.

What's Vinted like?

Some people are just awful! Not advice really than did you know that there is an ebay forum where lots of similar questions have been asked, or you can post your own question. You might get more replies and advice there too.

Does your eBay account show your address? If you are a private seller then unless you put a return address on the envelope, they almost certainly won't have it. My profile and other private sellers I have bought from just show my location is in the UK.

I'd be inclined to just forget it and move on. Don't let them occupy any headspace.

Vinted has been fine for me so far but I notice that the printed postage labels they provide you with do have my address as a return address.

KirstenBlest · 09/03/2024 13:16

My address was on the label. She is about 75 mins away.
Looks like a newish ebayer.

I'll leave it for now I think and see what happens but it was upsetting.

That is nasty. The review itself may be justifiable if she (if it is a she) had genuinely felt duped into buying rubbish/misdescribed items; but the actual message is very threatening indeed - making it into a personal insult and then saying she knows where you live. What is wrong with some people?

puzzledout · 09/03/2024 14:01

Well that is nasty! I would raise it with eBay!

Oh no! That's really horrible. Sorry you are having to deal with that. There are some very damaged people out that looking for inventive ways to troll. I would report to the police. A swift visit or phone call might put this person off behaving like that in the future. Such twisted behaviour! Some people will sink to real lows to feel some small power.

KirstenBlest · 09/03/2024 14:10

She could have just requested a refund. I'd have just refunded.
The address is not in a good area, but neither is mine.

Well that is nasty! I would raise it with eBay! I've reported the buyer and the message but they won't do anything.

Absolutely.👍
Been on eBay for over 20yrs but do not sell any more as some people (a minority) are out to scam you and eBay will ALLWAYS take their side.☹️
Moved onto FB Marketplace and that was great at the start but again, that is now full of scammers and chancers.😖
Charity shops get most stuff nowadays or I will offer on the local FB Group.😐

I would report to the police.

I would do this too. Granted, it's not the crime of the century, and they may do nothing; but even if the police sent her a standard letter or paid her a visit for making threatening comments to people online, it would make her think very carefully in future.

I refuse to believe that somebody who behaves like this would do so as an isolated incident. You reporting her to the police could be a vital piece of the jigsaw, if she's been going around spreading hate and threats on a regular basis.

It's horrible for us all to 'not be able to have nice things' because of the antics of scammers, cheats and liars on eBay, Marketplace and the like - very much not helped by how the platforms respond in their favour.

These are wonderful, very useful ways of buying and selling goods, and the great majority of people are decent and honest. It's so disheartening that a minority of bad people drive the good folk away and spoil it for everybody.

Yeah I'll use Marketplace or Gumtree now but I only really sell to clear stuff out. Brings it's own problems with the more personal nature.

I was considering trying vinted for some football boots DS has outgrown, do you have an opinion on that as a sellers platform?
