Ebay message

Have just had an email from another ebay member stating they have checked out our feedback and the camera they brought from us was originally bought on ebay by us so we gave false information. (This is untrue). They are saying they want a full refund back and costs to post back to us. We have sold two cameras recently and have received feedback. The person who has emailed us has an email account but his name isnt one showing on anything we have sold?? His message is in our ebay account aswell so not just our inbox but something doesnt feel right. There are no actual details about the item, ie number, description, just his message. He says if we dont respond asap he will report us to ebay. Is this scam or for real???

sounds like a scam, so what if it was brought on ebay and then you sold it on again anyway. I brought a pram on ebay and then sold it again. I would ignore him.

scottishmummy · 20/03/2008 12:38

dodgy.ignore it

NatalieJane · 20/03/2008 12:38

I'd tell them to report it, there is no rule saying that if you bought something on eBay that you can't then sell it again on eBay.

If you didn't buy it from eBay, do you have a reciept to prove where you did buy it?

I certainly wouldn't send a refund until they return the camera in it's original condition.

Does seem so dodgy. It was my DH who sold it so will have to wait till he's home to see what he knows but they reckon we stated it was new which we didnt. I havent responded but if we do and its a scam will it open up any details of our account etc which he could use? Can only assume thats why people scam on ebay and am worried we could unknowingly give out our details.

Sorry NatalieJane, no, no receipt as bought ages ago. As for a refund, we wont be sending it unless returned like you said. We have only just started using ebay again as had a break from all the crap that goes with it and I am already seriously regretting it!

As long as the it did clearly state is wasn't new in the advert I'd just leave it to be honest, if the buyer gets eBay involved they will see the auction and if it says 'used' then that will be enough to satisfy them. If you were feeling really kind you could offer them a refund, less P&P both ways, it was the buyers cock up not yours.

I don't really know about replying, I never know how clever these scamers can be, like I said I'd ignore it for now, or instead of just replying to their message, make a new message to them, through eBay.

We have stopped selling on eBay, can see it is only going to get even worse after the new guidelines come in.

pickie · 20/03/2008 13:21

is the message in your messages on Ebay? If so it should be ok as you can log into your account go to your messages and then answer it.

MsPontipine · 20/03/2008 14:02

You'd know if you sold it to them!! Ask them to send you the item number. Maybe they've just made a mistake and messaged the wrong seller.

Winston · 20/03/2008 14:29

Thanks guys. I must admit I am very concerned about emailing back as have bad feeling about it. We definatley stated it was used condition so to be honest I dont think Ebay would be too fussed. The message was in My Ebay Account which is why I have worried about it. We always get ones just to our email but not our messgaes in Ebay so always ignore those but this is different. MsP, he definatley hasnt bought anything using his ebay user name from us, am wondering if he used another name?

pickie · 20/03/2008 14:36

Maybe he changes his username? You can check this (i think) by clicking on his username

Winston · 20/03/2008 14:41

Will give it a go, thanks pickie.

Sounds like a scam, send an e-mail to the user who bought it from you (not to the address or message in your inbox, but in the details of buyers bit) asking if they have been in contact and if they have any problems. This way you will know if e-mail is genuine.

Really sounds like a scam, I can message any user on ebay without having bought from them.

sixlostmonkeys · 20/03/2008 15:54

I had something similar a while back - wanting a refund for the 52" Tv I posted to California - yeah right . I ignored it.

I reckon yours is a scam - easy to do - pick on a seller, send an email as he did, hope seller falls for it sends them some money. Some people are actually afraid of this "I will report you to ebay" stuff - gawd knows why!

I'd either ignor it or send a reply along the lines of - sorry mate, but I haven't sold you a camera.
Don't get in a flap about it. Even if it turns out to be an actual buyer of yours, they can 'report' as much as they want..... it won't get them anywhere

Flight · 20/03/2008 15:58

Forward it to [email protected]. They might investigate, they won't let you know what they find out and will send you a confusing generic reply, so ignore that too.
Don't reply to the sender of the dodgy one at all.

Winston · 20/03/2008 19:06

Thanks guys, its good to know you all think its scam too. DH just read it and said there is no way its a proper complaint. We are going to report it and ignore his message. Sixlostmonkeys, know what your saying about the threat of "reporting you to ebay" comment. Its like Ebay are the FBI or something!!

Lauriefairycake · 20/03/2008 19:15

also, make sure that when you click on the message that it doesn't take you to a logon page where you accidentally log in and it gives the scammer your login details.

Come out of ebay and reload and then log back in to check they haven't stolen your account. This happened to me five years ago, it's a very well known scam - luckily i got hold of ebay quickly and got my account back.

sixlostmonkeys · 20/03/2008 20:27

FBI? hehe more like MFI - you can never work out what goes where, never find anyone in charge and when they do get back to you they offer the wrong advice.
