What am I doing wrong?

I'm hacked off with ebay. Spent ages listing a load of stuff last weekend and it's gone for peanuts. Whenever I'm after something the price goes sky high.

I'm selling some boden pyjamas hardly used - 99p with about 1 mintue to go. Look through other pyjamas - one pair obviusly well used going for £10.50 PLUS £3.50 postage. My postage is dead cheap.

Waaahhh it's not fair and I can't be bothered anymore. SULK

i gave up selling clothes on ebay becasue i cannot seem to get any money for them and resent selling stuff for 99p would rather give it away TBH!

pigsinmud · 16/03/2008 21:02

That's just what I said to dh. I'd rather have given it away. Just bugs me that if I'm after an item the price goes shooting up!

Dh just suggested that perhaps I have bad taste in clothes which is why it doesn't sell!

gave up too! id rather tip it then sell on there nowadays! I thnk most are their mates bidding it up for them..

blueshoes · 16/03/2008 21:09

schilke, how much did the pjs finally go for?

BroccoliSpears · 16/03/2008 21:09

Do you have good feedback?
Are your photos clear and detailed?
Do you write clear descriptions?
Is your postage reasonable?

Sometimes things just seem not to attract bidders (and somewhere, someone is thrilled with their ebay bargain! It's what keeps everyone bidding). Annoying for you though.

I find some things just aren't worth the effort of listing, but I'm surprised boden pjs didn't go.

crokky · 16/03/2008 21:24

I go through phases when I'm really annoyed with eBay. We have 100% positive, loads of feedback, cheap postage and list clearly. We get messed around all the time and it really makes you question whether the stuff should just go to the charity shop. Usually things go for a reasonable price, but sometimes you do get hardly any bids and a rubbish sale price and it's even more gutting.

From the perspective of a buyer, my mum recently bought an item and paid for it immediately via PayPal. Over a month has passed and she still does not have the item and the seller is just lying about various delays (IMO). I also think the seller's mates escalated my mum's bid to the maximum. My brother also bought a rare DVD from eBay and it arrived and was a copy. I don't think we'll be buying anything from eBay for a long time so this contributes to a lack of bidders.

Too many people are trying to cheat others (both buyers and sellers) so people are just getting upset by it and I think the popularity of the site will decline.

BigBadMouse · 16/03/2008 21:34

I make a point of not listing on free listing weekends - you end up with too much competition and often sell for less than you would normally.

fingerwoman · 16/03/2008 21:38

schilke, what kind of titles are you putting on?

ie, if you just list "boden pyjamas" you may get less views.
I would search for ds for example under "boden 3" because I want to find things in his size. put as much info in titles as poss so that people can find your items.

ara · 16/03/2008 21:40

i find good photos really help - i always photoshop the backgrounds out!!

Flibbertyjibbet · 16/03/2008 21:43

I find ebay swings and roundabouts - somethings go for less than you expect, other things go for more. So I just bung about 10 or 12 things on every few months and just leave them to sell. I have decided to look on the total amount that they bring, rather than individual amounts. So even if this weeks 10 items sell for 99p,with the listing fees etc deducted I still get £5 in our holiday fund. No point getting 'gutted' if something goes for a small amount - cos that small amount is in your pocket and it wouldn't have been without ebay.
I have only been 'messed around' twice in about 100 sales and twice when buying so I must be doing something different to you?
Oh and I list childrens things after 9pm at night (mums surf when kids in bed) baby stuff for mid-morning for all the ladies on maternity leave with napping babies, and other items ie phones so that they fall due on a Friday lunchtime when everyone at work is surfing. Seems to work!

frogs · 16/03/2008 22:05

Do a link to your items, and we'll see if we can find any obvious reasons for it not going. I find my Boden stuff usually sells pretty well, sometimes ridiculously so, though you can get unlucky occasionally.

TheBlonde · 16/03/2008 23:15

Right I think I found you...

For the PJs in your item specifics you didn't put the brand so if people used that to search for boden they wouldn't have found your stuff

do you smoke?
some of your listing say pet free home - if you only put that then I would assume you smoke

pigsinmud · 16/03/2008 23:40

Oh - I thought I filled in brand. No don't smoke and I did realise that I hadn't put that on any of them, but couldn't be bothered to change it!

I did do free weekend and think that was a mistake. I'll look at the bigger picture - you're right flibbertyjibbert.

Pjs went for 99p. Perhapt I'm too honest - there was a very slight mark to the front and I mentioned it, but really impossible to spot. Other pair went for £1.75.

I need more practise at selling I think. Got a few other things to put on - trying to save for a new guinea pig hutch.

blueshoes · 17/03/2008 09:21

schilke, you live and learn. If it is Boden, the brand needs to be everywhere on the listing!

Fine to describe the mark, you have to do it anyway. I have bid a decent price for Boden stuff with marks on. Just do a photo so people can judge.

Fingerwoman makes a good point about putting the size in the title. Also put the size in the eBay description (you know those boxes that describe brand, material, condition, size etc) because a lot of people filter their searches by size.

Also, I don't know what those pjs look like. But no getting away from the fact that colourful clothes make better pictures and generally sell better than light coloured clothing even in pristine condition. Signature Boden will always attract a lot of bids.

pigsinmud · 17/03/2008 10:08

Feeling better today! I suppose we all want a bargain and some people got one from me yesterday! I was justa bit cheesed off as it took me so long to list the other day.

I did put size in title and in the little description boxes - just wasn't my day.

Thanks for the tips.

We have made quite alot of money I never list an item unless I reserach what it sells for.
The only thing that is annoying is the price hike on the amount ebay take and also fees for paypal.

Read ebay pulse on what sells. I bought some perfume at superdrug reduced and made a good profit.
