Insure for the value or price paid on eBay?

I've had my account with eBay about 19 years and my mind has gone blank.

I've always insured the parcels for the amount paid on eBay not the value of the item.

However it's just dawned on me that if I use say Evri how can I prove what it's worth?

If I sell something that's worth £10 but someone pays £30 would Evri or Royal Mail pay the £30? This is just an example.

Thanks.

Why would anyone pay £30 for something worth £10? Surely the fact someone has paid £30 means it is worth that much.

Slightly harder if someone gets a bargain. But how could you prove it was worth more than someone won it for on a auction site.

So, I'd say e-bay value unless you can show someone got a bargain and it's worth more.

That was just an example.

I'm hoping to sell something I paid £50 for.

I need to replace it with a different size and I'll need to pay £100 odd to buy on eBay.

I'm hoping I sell it for £100. But do I insure for what I paid or what it sells for?

If RM ask for a receipt they will see I paid £50.

Trying to get compensation for a lost parcel from Evri would be as difficult as getting to the moon on a spaghetti ladder. As for Royal Mail it depends if you go through eBay or go in person to the post office.
You insure it for the amount your buyer purchased it, So your solid silver 8 inch candlestick sells on eBay for £50 You insure it for that value. The fact that five years ago silver was of a higher value and you paid £100 is neither here nor there.
The fact you now want to buy 12 inch solid silver candlestick which is double the value of you 8" candlestick is irrelevant because you're not replacing like for like.
I doubt they'd ask for evidence, but getting compensation from them isn't easy, and they'll investigate the lost parcel in the first instance (I can't remember the timeframe they have to do this I think it's 28 working days? it probably says on the website), if the item is tracked and insured then it getting 'lost' in the post is unlikely.

Likewise if your solid silver candle stick has two bidders who get into a bidding war and it goes over it's starting price selling for £200 then you insure it for £200 because that's the cost of the refund. Mind you at £200 It would be cash on collection, I wouldn't want to risk posting it!

Thanks. I'm not sure why I'm so confused by this. I've sold with eBay years!!

If you need insurance use Royal Mail fully tracked. They will refund you for the price the buyer paid, and you use the ebay sale page as your proof. You can claim online and its really easy. You still lose out, they refund you and you have to refund the buyer.
As others have said, getting a refund from other couriers is almost impossible, I only use them for very cheap items.

i sell on ebay for a cat charity and evri is the charities choice of courier but basically anything that goes for over £50 i send by royal mail special delivery as its fully tracked insured and gets to the buyer the next day

Price paid on ebay . Royal mail ask for proof when claiming for a lost parcel. I had to provide screenshots of the transaction.

You have to prove the value you perceive item has, with a recent receipt (shows that you paid that much). If you don't have that recent receipt (< 6m old) then item is only worth what someone paid for it on Ebay.

I insure for no more than the amount net of Ebay fees & courier charge, and not at all for items that someone paid < £15 net of delivery charge.

I never recovered one parcel with Evri that was not collected by buyer. There was no way to get Evri to return it to me. I try to never use Evri now as a result.

I had a parcel go missing a month or so ago. Sent special delivery so was surprised they lost it. Royal Mail would not accept the screenshots of the eBay purchase as proof and said they would only refund what we paid for it, which we had no proof of as it was bought roughly 15 years ago. So they would only refund the postage. Bastards

The price paid on ebay IS the market value for that item, in that condition, at that time. Unless it was some kind of scam/connected party sale.
