Paying online and sending a van?

BananaSlug · 17/09/2023 10:25

Is there any way to pay for an item of furniture online and send a van to collect it? What would be the best way to do it or suggest (I don’t want to sound like a scammer) but I really need a new sofa and there is nothing in my immediate area I like I was thinking of eBay and then sending a van as I don’t drive and the place would be too far to get to. Is it a bank transfer? How would this work to make sure I also don’t get scammed? Has anyone done this ?

I always use Shiply. Before winning the item just add the item details to the site, so they know how much space it would take up in the van. Then you get email quotes that start off high and get progressively lower. You can check the feedback and history of the companies. It's better if you are flexible about the dates because then they can fit it into one of their planned routes.
It's a very user friendly site - try it out on a random sofa so you see how it works.

Oops just seen your question is more about payment. PayPal is completely reliable and trustworthy.

I've previously sold things and have always refused people asking to send a van, the reason being if the item is damaged in shipping this can cause issues the same as if the buyer gets the item and decided its not the size/colour/shape they were expecting. I recently gave away (for a family member) a 3 piece cream sofa suite, less than 6 months old and the person who wanted it moaned after as I never included the cushions that were photographed in it. They threatened legal action although can't see them getting far with that. The cushions were also given away but were listed separately. It was such a hassel. They also expected me to help them move the sofa, was only when I laughed and said no as I'd stated I'd put it at bottom of the garden for them. Think they called a mate or something.

Agree with PayPal for payment. Just check the seller is happy for you to arrange transport

BananaSlug · 17/09/2023 11:08

I thought sellers don’t accept PayPal for items that are collect as the buyer can claim not to receive it?

You will struggle to find a seller to agree to this, it's a common scam method.

It would be easier to use a shop and their delivery service.

stealthninjamum · 17/09/2023 11:14

Op could you arrange to be there when the van picks up the item and pay cash?

This is exactly why I don't accept PayPal for any item collected in person.

Have you looked at charity shops? We have loads round here with furniture in and they deliver for extra.

Brand new is well over 1000 which I don’t have but considering getting one on finance but just thought I would ask before I do as the sofa I like is £150 compared to £1k

comedownwithme · 17/09/2023 11:20

There are plenty cheaper options

BananaSlug · 17/09/2023 11:22

Not brand new? I won’t be able to get out to shops for reasons I won’t go into as only asking for eBay advice.

comedownwithme · 17/09/2023 11:30

There are lots of new sofas available to buy online for less than £1k

I appreciate you don't want to hear it but no one is going to accept a buyer sending a van without being paid cash on collection.

BananaSlug · 17/09/2023 11:34

No that’s fine that’s what I’m asking if people will accept it, if not that’s fine I can see why.

we are a family of 5 so not looking at 2 seaters I am looking at corner sofas and no those are not cheap.

A seller should never accept PayPal if you are collecting the item. it gives them no protection

PlipPlopChoo · 18/09/2023 18:53

Most sellers are going to refuse to accept paypal and collection due to scammers. If you really want the item you will have to hire a van and take cash with you.

GU24Mum · 18/09/2023 19:25

Can you arrange a van but also go there by cab to do the handover and pay the seller?

OneInEight · 19/09/2023 13:55

I must be naive cared more about getting rid of the damn thing than the money but I accepted a van pick-up for a sofa with paypal payment. But I agree if you want a safer option there are lots of charity shops who sell decent second-hand furniture and who will deliver for a small fee.

BananaSlug · 19/09/2023 18:58

Oh really! Sounds like it’s worth a try then, they can say no. It’s in Essex and I’m in south London so wouldn’t want to pay for a cab as it would cost a lot there and pack with the crossing

We sell on eBay. If someone wants a third party to arrange collection, we arrange for a code/password to be quoted by the driver doing the pick up

19lottie82 · 21/09/2023 16:05

Get the van driver to call when he arrives, confirm the goods are available for collection and then pay by bank transfer. That’s what I do.

TaaLaa · 30/09/2023 13:36

I have sold large collection only items on ebay and accepted PayPal.

things have changed somewhat in the respect that the the buyer is given a collection code by ebay to quote to the seller on collection.

I have also used anyvan to arrange collection of furniture on ebay. They are more expensive than shiply but I did find them easier to use. Shiply were a bloody nightmare.

BananaSlug · 30/09/2023 13:41

I’ve decided to just buy one way too many messers online I had someone giving away one for free she said I could have it I arranged a van then she gave it to someone else 🤣 best just buying one so that’s what I’m doing now! So much less hassle
