Sold an item of furniture, Buyer wants to use Shiply

I've sold a large item of furniture, collection only, but someone has bought it and they live miles away and want to use Shiply. They were the only bidder. But I wanted whoever bought it to come see it, check they were happy with it, and then take it away. I didn't want it being couriered to someone who might not be happy with it once they get it.

Has anyone any advice on whether I should go through with the sale? Or should I just explain that it is collection in person only and that I will be cancelling the sale?

I’d say it was a scam.

MoreRainbowsPlease · 10/07/2023 03:39

Thats what I'm worried about.

I'd cancel it

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/07/2023 03:47

Why would you suspect scam?

newmama2023 · 10/07/2023 04:29

This is an absolute FB scam! Tried with me multiple times. Dont do it. I think they also take over real accounts to send you the message to look legit. I bet if you politely replied saying no. Tomorrow a new person wil say the same thing but maybe a different courier

I understand this is ebay but it sounds just like the FB scams i was describing

What? It absolutely isn’t an indication that it’s a scam. I buy furniture on eBay all the time and use Shipley to get a courier to pick it up and deliver it. Why on earth would you think it’s a scam?

If I need a sideboard it is going to cost me £100 to hire a van, I’ve then got to find two strong helpers to take a day off to help me plus pay the fuel cost etc. It effectively puts a couple of hundred quid onto the price.

I can pay someone through Shipley half that to deliver to my doorstep.

Just from my experience i saw the red flags but I am sorry. And you are right. This does make sense

It's not about what you want. The buyer can't collect in person, so they've come up with an alternative which they're obviously happy with. I'd be really pissed off as a genuine buyer if you cancelled the sale for this reason.

But if the item is stated as collection only then they should have discussed a courier collecting before bidding.

I wouldn't have a massive issue with this through eBay/paypal as there are protections and should be proof of sending etc but the seller has every right to cancel the sale.

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/07/2023 08:35

No one has explained to me why this is automatically a scam. Shiply are totally legit (and a brilliant idea imo). Surely the buyer pays before the courier collects anyway?

TeaAndStrumpets · 10/07/2023 08:41

I have used Shiply, they are brilliant. You will get quotes from lots of different couriers so you can choose one you feel happy with.

nobodysdaughternow · 10/07/2023 08:45

I get furniture collected using a courier found via the Shiply website all the time.

The buyer pays you for the item via eBay. They put the job up on the Shiply website using thee eBay item number. Couriers bid for the job. Buyer selects a courier, pays a deposit. Courier picks item up, delivers item whereby they collect payment for courier service.

I am not on FB but it is 100% not a scam on eBay.

nobodysdaughternow · 10/07/2023 08:47

And 'collection in person' doesn't exclude couriers. They are people too you know Grin

HesDeadBenYouCanStopNow · 10/07/2023 08:52

The worry is that the buyer declares the product not as described and gets the fee repaid and keeps the furniture.

It's cash on collection only to avoid this with items you're not going to have proof of delivery on

I don't think it is on eBay. More Facebook/gumtree.

MetaverseMavis · 10/07/2023 09:00

If they use Shiply it is not returnable so as long as they pay you for the item and employ shiply directly you are ok

Englishrosegarden · 10/07/2023 09:02

How can you prove to Ebay that is has been delivered if the buyer is the one arranging the shipping? All the buyer has to do is claim non-delivery and ask for a refund and you have no way of proving they have it.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 10/07/2023 09:16

Does the buyer have many eBay reviews? Don’t just check the number of positive vs negative, read the comments as eBay make it nearly impossible to give a negative rating as the headline.

Mummyofdoggies · 10/07/2023 09:20

Even if it's legit, you will have to wrap/pack it and be at home for the courier ....

steppemum · 10/07/2023 09:21

hmm. I would be cautious.
With larger collect items, we have alwasy done cash on collection.
That way the item is seen, approved, and cash changed hands and no-one later can say that it wasn't as listed etc.

If the original listing stated collection only, I would be wary of a courier collection.

good advice

saraclara · 10/07/2023 09:25

I've arranged several shiply pick ups. Totally legitimately and it's pretty much the only way to get furniture etc picked up, especially in cities.

I've never heard of any Shiply scams.

It's the buyer who enters into the contract with shiply. OP has no responsibility for anything to do with the delivery, other than being in for the pick up.

RoseAndRose · 10/07/2023 09:29

It's not automatically a scam, but it can be one.

When someone who lists as "collection only" then of course it's fine for the vendor to insist on exactly that.
